Fourth-graders attend agriculture event

Kevin Lowe has been a part of every Fourth Grade Agriculture Awareness Day but two .
“ I like seeing all the kids , teaching them how important our food is , how safe it is and that it doesn ’ t just come from the store ,” he said .
Lowe , a local dairy farmer , volunteered at the event with the Coshocton County Dairy Service Unit . He was one of several volunteers who manned 15 different stations at the educational event on Sept . 15 at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds and organized by the Farm Bureau .
This was Alex Nelson ’ s first year at the event . She is the new program director and education specialist for the Coshocton County Recycling & Litter Prevention office .
“ I really like this event ,” she said . “ It ’ s really well put together . I ’ m lucky they reached out to me .”
FFA members from River View and Ridgewood high schools helped escort the students around to stations .
“ I want to be an elementary school teacher ,” said Kyra Weaver , a Ridgewood FFA member . “ This gives me experience dealing with kids . Most of them are sweethearts .”
Kayla Jones , organization director for the Farm Bureau , said about 350 fourth-graders were expected to attend the event .
Keene Elementary fourth-grader Juanita Troyer liked the egg relay they did with OSU Extension Coshocton County staff . At this station students learned the

number-one livestock raised in Coshocton County is meat chickens , and they are followed by laying chickens . Troyer ’ s classmates Elli Endsley , Autumn Yoder and Sylvie Mullett also enjoyed learning about bees .
“ This event helps us get kids out in agriculture and us strengthen our partnerships with organizations ,” Jones said . “ Hopefully , it gets them answers to their questions too and teaches them a little bit about where their food comes from .”
