went ,” she said . “ I was never one for playing games , and I never could decide what I wanted to spend my money on . One year I hadn ’ t gotten anything to commemorate the fair . This guy was selling wooden boxes , and he scribbled my name on it . I still have that little box . You always have to pick up waffles for somebody . Now I go out to the barns because there is always something going on out there . It has always been fun . I do miss the pony rides that Tom Roahrig had . It is still fun now , but I can ’ t walk as far , and that is what has changed .”
Dorothy Manning said she has always enjoyed the fair .
“ I have gone since I was a little girl , and I am 83 now ,” she said . “ I always went with my parents , who used to take a basket in the back of our car , and we would meet back at the car to eat lunch there .
I enjoyed the fair , but when it was good weather , you had to fight off the bees . I got to enjoy the rides , and we would go out and see everyone ’ s accomplishments at the fair . I enjoyed everything and everybody . We would get to see old friends and even family members I hadn ’ t seen in years .
“ I loved the horse races , and I loved the tractor pull , the demolition derby and the bull riding . Everything out there has just been phenomenal , and I always enjoyed going . The waffles are my favorite fair food , absolutely . I would always ask if I could just go in to get some waffles and come right back out , and I would do that . Lots of times I helped different people and worked at the fair . The senior center was one . So I enjoyed that , and I enjoyed being out there . I am a people person and enjoy being around everybody , and the friendships are keepsakes — lots of good memories .”
