COSHOCTON - Hunter Haas got his first motorbike for his third birthday and last summer , he fulfilled a dream of winning Ohio ’ s State Motocross Championship .
Haas said he started riding at three and racing at four . His dad , Jeff , rode motorbikes and got him started . “ He always does whatever he can to make me better . He goes to all the races with me and makes sure the bikes are ready to go . He built a private practice track for me , too .”
Haas said his whole family has been supportive of his riding and they do whatever they can to help him . “ My Grandpa , Dave Haas , is really supportive . He always helps out with whatever I need , too .” He said it also keeps his sport a little less expensive when someone can work on the bikes .
“ I used to watch the races on TV and hoped I could do that some time . I wanted to be the one who was being watched .”
- Hunter Haas
“ I work on them , too , but my dad is the expert . Whenever I ’ m not sure how to do something , I ask him .” Working on his motorcycles and traveling together has been a great bonding experience for the dad and son .
Motorbikes have always been a big part of Haas ’ life . “ I used to watch the races on TV and hoped I could do that some time . I wanted to be the one who was being watched .” He said riding also helps him get away from things . “ It ’ s always a good time on the bikes .”
The 21-year-old attends Muskingum University and is studying health and fitness . He plans to be either a physical or massage therapist . “ I ’ m hoping to go pro with the racing but the therapy is a good way to earn money and help people .”
The state championship he won was the Open B Class

which is one step before going pro . “ I ’ m hoping to move up next year and get my pro license so I can compete in bigger races .” There are several ways to earn a pro license , but he plans to earn enough points and submit his resume to the American Motorcyclist Association to be approved . Once he has that , there are about 17 races he will be eligible to compete in . His ultimate goal is to make racing his profession .
“ It ’ ll be tough to get my license by next summer , but I ’ d like to compete at High Point National in Pennsylvania and Red Bud in Michigan next summer .
To him , he has never been seriously injured while racing , but he has had a few concussions and broken bones . “ Nothing too terrible .” He said he isn ’ t scared when he races , but when he is sitting with the other racers and waiting for the gate to drop , it ’ s nerve wracking . “ I know what I ’ m planning to do , but you never know about the other riders . Their mistake could cause problems for me . Everything is a guessing game .” He said that sometimes when he takes off his jersey after a race , his chest and arms are covered with welts from dirt from other bikes hitting him during the race .
“ My dad called and said the results were in . I had won by one point – that ’ s a little too close for me , but I won .”
- Hunter Haas
There were three races that made up the state championship . Haas had the most overall points and was named state championship . “ After the last race , we were full of mixed emotions . I thought I won then we thought I didn ’ t . Then we did again .” The winner wasn ’ t announced that day . The family had to wait for the results to be posted .
“ My dad called and said the results were in . I had won by one point – that ’ s a little too close for me , but I won .” He said he had a couple mishaps and bad starts during the races , finishing third , fourth and sixth in them . “ I was kinda surprised I won , but I was pretty pumped , too .”
DJ Woody Vinyl Frontier , Johnson ’ s Plumbing , MTC Fitness , Route 62 MSX Park and EKS Brand Goggles are all sponsors for his racing . He is always looking for others . If you are interested in sponsoring Haas in following his dream , you can contact him at 740-552-1532 .
