The Blue Star Mothers hosted the second annual Hometown Hero Veterans Picnic at the Senior Center on Sept . 10 .
“ We love serving our veterans , and we just want to tell them thank you . We ’ re serving hot dogs , hamburgers , baked beans and macaroni salad . We have door prizes for them ,” Blue Star Mothers President Sharon Burns said . “ We purchased gift cards as a way to say thank you and told them they could bring their caregivers and spouses , just whoever they wanted to bring with them .
“ The West Lafayette queen court is serving and helping them carry their food . Veterans Helping Veterans provided the hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill . We would love to see some of our younger veterans here next year . Someone will carry on after our older guys , and that happens to be our younger veterans .”
Army vet Jack Patterson served from 1966-69 . “ I really appreciate all that the Blue Star Mothers are doing for us today . I ’ m in several organizations , commander of the county council , also on the veterans commission for Coshocton County . I have attended over 1,063 funerals so far . This is really great . I wish more veterans would participate because it ’ s important that we are recognized for what we do .”
Jerry Hosfelt , who was in the U . S . Army from 1967-69 , served in Vietnam in 1968-69 . “ I got Agent Orange from the jungles when they sprayed the vegetation . I ’ m proud to be a veteran , and I love to have people learn about how we got our chapter started , and I loved marching in parades . I talk to people all the time . I go to the Canton VA and talk to people there . I ’ ve been married 52 years to my wife Carolyn .”
Hosfelt met his wife when he came home in April 1969 and got married the following January .
“ This is a Blue Star Mom event this morning for a veterans appreciation lunch and an information event ,” said Doug Shaffer , director and county veterans service officer at the Coshocton County Veterans Office . “ There is

“ Our veterans service office can help if they need any assistance navigating the veterans administration system with claim work , paper work , burial benefits , et cetera . That ’ s what we do at the office at no charge to the veterans . We are letting them know we exist , and we are here for them because many don ’ t know what we can do for them .”
The veterans office is located at 318 Main St . inside the court house . Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a . m .

to 4 p . m . There also will be information available at the booth under the grandstand at the Coshocton County Fair .
Stephanie Hawkins provided information at the picnic for Operation Veterans Helping Veterans . “ We ’ re here today with items we ’ ve had from previous events for donations , and we are getting ready for our sixth annual ruck fundraiser on Nov . 11 ,” she said . “ A ruck is a hike carrying a 20-pound pack . We walk either from Newcomerstown High School to Ridgewood High School or vice versa . We swap it out . It ’ s an 8.8-mile walk . You don ’ t have to carry a pack unless you want to .
“ Anyone can sponsor a veteran , local or nonlocal , or honor a service member . We have a shirt with the vet ’ s name on the back that you can preorder . To find more information , go to our Facebook page , Veterans Helping Veterans . We have a golf outing each year in May . The funds help local veterans in need . It can help with rent or utility bills and things to help them get through the winter months . We also help local high school graduates that are planning to go into the military , and we donate to our three schools , plus Newcomerstown .”
