becoming a lost art form,
said Mike Erb of Sugar
Valley Meats, a family
owned and operated shop
that is celebrating its 30th
year serving Sugarcreek and
surrounding communities.
“There aren’t as many
butcher shops as there used
to be,” Erb said. “A trained
and skilled butcher can really
make a big difference in the
quality of a cut of meat. We

goes out the door. Even before
the current situation, with
meat not being as abundant
as normal, our hamburger
usually would be sold the
same day we ground it.
Freshness is one of the things
we pride ourselves on.”
Sugar Valley Meats’
butchers are happy to make
specialty cuts for customers
while they wait.
“For example, we have
precut steaks in the store
that are three quarters of
an inch thick,” Erb said.
“If somebody wants a nice,
big, thick, inch-and-a-half
steak, we can cut that right
away for them. We also do
a lot of custom butchering
and furnished processing for
farmers. We take the animals
in live, they go through the
whole process, and when
they’re finished, they’re all
wrapped and ready to go

butchering is really our bread
and butter.”
