Farm in Newcomerstown raises exotic animals

By Marianne Austin
If you ’ re ever driving along County Road 103 in Newcomerstown and see a pasture of zebras , there is no need to do a double take because , yes , you did see zebras .
Dale Miller of Blue Ridge Farm raises exotic animals . He also has about 30 Aoudad sheep in a pasture out back .
“ The sheep multiply pretty fast ,” he said . “ They look more like goats , but only the males have big horns . The females ’ horns aren ’ t as big . They come from Africa , but they have them in the wilds in Texas . They like to get up on ledges . If you keep stones in there , it keeps their hooves worn down so

they don ’ t grow too long ; otherwise , you will have to trim them . These can jump high . They can jump right over a 5-foot fence . I feed them sheep feed about every other day , but they mostly eat grass . I used to raise ostriches , and I ’ ve had deer . That ’ s the reason the fences are so high .”
The zebras pasture out in the winter . “ It gets pretty cool , as low as 40 degrees in Kenya , where they ’ re from ,” Miller said . “ In the higher

elevations , no higher than 80 degrees . Temperatures in Kenya are about the same year round . I feed the zebras horse feed , and they eat grass . Zebras aren ’ t regulated anymore like some other exotic animals . My niece was a missionary in Kenya , and that ’ s why we initially went there . We went on a safari while we were there . We saw a lion stalk a warthog . He was watching it , and he snuck up on it until he thought he was close enough and took off , but the warthog beat him .”
Miller said people drive by and stop along the fence to take pictures .
“ If you leave them on the mares , they tend to stay wild , so I feed the babies with the bottle ,” he said . “ I had one that would follow me around the yard . I had one over 20 years , and she was pretty tame . She would come up and eat out of your hand . I have five zebras pastured here now . They have about 3-4 acres pasture land , and they do pretty well with that . One baby was born the first week in August and is only a little over a month .”
Miller will sell the babies at Mount Hope Auction . On Saturday the auction sells exotic animals .
