Did you know horses once assisted local firefighters ?
The Coshocton City Council members were involved in a heated debate , which is probably nothing new , but this time it was February 1913 .
It seems as if some of the members wanted to purchase an auto fire truck , and some wanted to keep the three horses already working for the fire house . Back in November 1907 , three firemen were hired for the new fire department at the yearly rate of $ 720 . The new fire chief , Harry Fink , would earn a salary of $ 840 .
In addition , two horses and the installation of 20 alarm

Let ’ s get to the bottom of the cause

WELLNESS boxes rounded out the expenditure . Then the debate arose involving the horses . Would they buy an auto fire truck or keep the horses already working . The general opinion was the new vehicle should not be purchased without looking to the matter more thoroughly .
The original cost of the truck would be between $ 7,000 and $ 20,000 , which would be needed for the upkeep of the fire truck . Generally , keeping the horses would be around $ 1,500 .
It would be necessary to issue bonds for no less than $ 15,000 . Then there would be depreciation on the machine , and a new price of tires alone would cost about as much as keeping three horses for a year .
Councilman J . W . Thompson said the fire department is located in the center of the city . It would not be required for the horses to run more than a mile to the scene of a fire . “ Fire horses ,” Thompson

At a special meeting in 1919 , George Klein put forth a resolution authorizing E . C . Compton , service safety director , to sell the horses , which had been used for several years by the fire department , and to rent an auto truck until a combination hose and chemical truck could be secured .
C . W . Loose authorized rental of a 1-ton truck at $ 20 . Three or four months were required for delivery , and during that time , they rented a cheaper truck . The expense
CCYL class learns about Main Street
Coshocton County Youth Leadership met Sept . 21 , gathering at the Main Street Station banquet room .
This is our second meeting this year . This meeting was mostly based on the history and development of Main Street in Coshocton . We traveled throughout Main Street listening and learning from many of the small businesses such as Deans Jewelry , Rust Decor and Renaissance on Main , learning much of their history and arduous work throughout the years . These
businesses taught the group many things about the challenges of running a small business and how they have adapted to problems that have occurred .
While traveling from business to business , Tom Barcroft told us a lot about the history of the buildings on Main Street . After
going around different businesses , we traveled back to the banquet room and had lunch provided by Main Street Station . While in the banquet room , we heard from many speakers including Lanny Spaulding , who shared with us what Our Town Coshocton is and what they do .
To conclude our day , we finished at Scoops ice cream shop , which also is on Main Street , to enjoy some of their delicious ice cream . If you have any questions concerning CCYL or want to know more , call Executive Director Betsy Gosnell at 740-622-0010 or email bgosnell @ coshoctonfoundation . org .

Not every horse could serve as a fire horse . Training took up to two years of a four- to eight-year career . The animals needed to be strong , fast and obedient and needed to stand patiently while embers and flames surrounded them .
Breed types were typically Percherons . Lighterweight horses pulled wagons , middle-weight horses

pulled the steam engine , and heavy weights pulled the hook and ladder wagons .
At first horses were stabled at fire stations . When the alarm sounded , it took time to unlock the barn and harness the horses to the wagon . Fire trucks were more efficient , and before long the horses were retired . Some retired horses hearing the alarm would forget they were retired and charge down Main Street .
