Pavilion
100th anniversary weekend set at pavilion
By Josie Sellers
Since 1923 Lake Park Pavilion has stood as a place to enjoy music and gather for various special occasions . This month the historical facility will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a dance on Saturday , Oct . 21 and open house on Sunday , Oct . 22 .
The Friends of the Parks Fall Harvest Dance featuring the Lake Park Big Band will be held Oct . 21 from 7-10 p . m . at Lake Park Pavilion . Tickets are $ 15 each and available by calling the park office at 740-622-7528 . A limited number of tickets will be available at the door . Attendees are welcome to bring their own beverages and snacks . Miss Ohio Madison Miller also plans to stop by during the dance .
“ This is an iconic landmark in our community ,” said Tim Vance , who is with the Lake Park Big Band . “ We want to promote it and the fact that there are few

buildings like it that remain . It ’ s worthy of preservation .”
The anniversary open house will be held Oct . 22 from 2-5 p . m ., and Ken Smailes will do a presentation at 3 p . m . on the history of the pavilion .
“ He really does his research and will be very efficient ,” Bob Bigrigg from Friends of the Parks said .
Vance said the pavilion was constructed in 1923 by Dick and Helen Johns , who came to the area after a career

as vaudeville entertainers . They added other attractions and operated the park until 1944 . Over the years many greats from the Big Band era like Stan Kenton , Duke Ellington , Les Brown , Billy May , Benny Goodman , Johnny Long , Sammy Kaye , Lionel Hampton and Woody Herman performed at the pavilion .
The facility changed hands several more times until it was acquired by the City of Coshocton in 1959 .
The Coshocton City and County Park District then took it over in 1985 . In 1993 a renovation committee recommended extensive rehabilitation projects . More than $ 600,000 was raised to make needed updates that were unveiled in April 1995 .
Vance was on the committee to help renovate the pavilion and said the band formed shortly after that to celebrate music from the building ’ s heyday .
“ We had a modest book back then , but now we have about 200 titles to celebrate ,” he said . “ Not all our songs are from the ‘ 40s and ‘ 50s . We play songs like ‘ Proud Mary ’ and some other rock and roll songs .”
Park Director Tammi Rogers said the pavilion can hold up to 500 people and last year hosted more than 40 events . Bigrigg likes the openness of the facility , and Ron Geese said the acoustics are great in the building . He plays in the Lake Park Big Band and said he can ’ t wait to be part of the 100th anniversary celebration .
“ It ’ s a joy to play in the band ,” Geese said . “ We have so many good players , and we play some of the greatest music ever written .”
Proceeds from events like this help Friends of the Parks provide money for upgrades to the pavilion .
“ The park district comes to us with projects they ’ d like to do , and we help where we can ,” Fred Wachtel from Friends of the Parks said . “ With proceeds from our last dance , we were able to do new flooring in the kitchen and some painting .”
Bigrigg said another project on their list is the flooring in the entire pavilion .
“ It still has the original flooring ,” he said . “ It ’ s been redone a number of times , but wood floors wear out .”
Wachtel said a dozen corporate sponsors have been secured for the dance , but more are welcome . Call the park office for more information .
