White Tail Heritage of Ohio holds annual deer hunt

White Tail Heritage of Ohio sponsored its 11th annual deer hunt for firsttime hunters and anyone with a disability on Oct . 5 at Pilgrim Hills mentoring camp near Tiverton .
This daylong event was for anyone youth to adult who wanted to learn to hunt and experience the outdoors . Tiverton Hunting Township co-op in Northwest Coshocton County supports local hunters , and this event wouldn ’ t be possible without landowners who open their property for the hunt . Many properties were wheelchair accessible .
Beginning at 8 a . m ., the hunters arrived with their family and were introduced to their guides , followed by small group training and then the hunt .
“ This year we opened it up for anyone who would like to hunt including people with disabilities ,” Tommy Ridenbaugh said . “ We start by introducing the hunters to their guide who will stay with them all day long .”

Whitetail Heritage of Ohio had more than 60 applicants and selected 32 for its recent hunt . Two of the Coshocton County Special Olympics athletes , Samantha and Jacob , were chosen this year .
Cameramen film each hunt and put together a DVD , and at the end of the day , each hunter receives his / her video of the hunt at the banquet .
“ We supply 10-point crossbows and gear for the hunt ,” Ridenbaugh said . “ We have guides with the hunters teaching them how to shoot and handle a crossbow . The hunters don ’ t handle anything until they go out with the guides to instruct them . Jerrod Allison , Ohio Department of Natural Resources wildlife officer for Coshocton County , comes and explains the State of Ohio ’ s hunting regulations about how to hunt and what the regulations are so they are ready to go out . We also teach proper shot placement and ethical hunting skills .”
After lunch everyone in each group is assigned to a property where they can hunt until around an hour after sundown . They come back to Pilgrim Hills with their harvest and have a celebration where the hunters are acknowledged .
“ It ’ s a full day of teaching them the proper way to hunt , enjoy the outdoors and know the laws ,” Ridenbaugh said . “ A lot of the hunters have disabilities , so if this is one of their dreams , we try to fulfill that any way that we can . We are very capable of taking anyone . We have taken blind hunters where the guide can look through the scope and tell them which way to aim . We aspire to ‘ anything can happen with any disability .’ This year with 32 hunters ages 10-75 , we successfully bagged 25 deer all in one afternoon .” Each year they host

begins at 8 a . m . when the hunters arrive with their families and ends with a catered dinner supplied by Byler ’ s Barbeque . They also cook all day long for the hunters and their families , providing breakfast , lunch and dinner .
