Grewell shares journey with cancer

By Josie Sellers
When Terra Grewell turned 40 in 2020 , she did what she was supposed to and scheduled her first routine mammogram .
“ I just thought I ’ d get a letter saying they ’ d see me again in a year ,” she said . “ I was very optimistic that I ’ d go in and nothing would be found .”
Grewell was called back for a second mammogram at Knox Community Hospital and soon found herself having a biopsy done .
“ I was on my way home from the mammogram and ultrasound appointment when the surgeon ’ s office called ,” she said . “ I was almost to Warsaw , so I went back . They scheduled the biopsy , and I had an MRI the following week .”
Grewell was diagnosed in December 2020 . Her breast cancer was one of the most aggressive types but also most treatable .
“ I had a port put in and did six rounds of chemotherapy ,” she said . “ That was not fun .”
Grewell also had a double mastectomy .
“ I had it on my right side , but I decided to have both removed ,” she said .

“ Even if it was just the tiniest chance , I didn ’ t want this to come back , so I was OK with having it done .”
Grewell is still being treated and receiving 14 rounds of a cancer-fighting drug .
“ I go every three weeks ,” she said . “ It ’ s so much better than the chemo . I ’ m tired for a couple of days , and then I ’ m OK .”
A good support system and attitude have been essential to getting through this almost yearlong ordeal .
“ My family and having a positive attitude about everything really helped ,” she said . “ My family and friends were there for me even though no one could really come around .”
Grewell ’ s advice to other women is to get their mammogram and try to have a positive attitude no matter what happens .
“ It ’ s not always easy , but sometimes attitude really is everything ,” she said . “ It does get overwhelming . I ’ m pretty sure I was numb the first six weeks , but you have to take one day at a time and don ’ t think about what is next .”
