“ Lori and I have been in the church since 1974 ,” Youker said . “ It ’ s been a lot of years . Our children grew up in the church too , and our mother Faye Casey played the piano for 35-40 years . The reason we started coming to this church was because my mother ’ s grandmother was one of the original members back in 1899 . Her name was Anna Sinden Tompkins . She came here as a teenager , and she was the janitor . She would walk 2 miles to the church to start the furnace on Sunday mornings , from the Cat Swamps to the church .
“ She was from England . Her mother and father worked on Sundays because they were farmers , and they had to work for 17 years to pay back their land . She started at the little church , and then they moved over to the one on Russell Avenue . Old records showed that she was one of the last members of the old church . She went to the little white church from 1870-91 . We always fall temperatures into the region which allowed for a very pleasant 50th

Shiloh Kinzel ’ s family brought animals for a petting zoo that people on the tour could enjoy . Kinzel is in the sixth grade at Warsaw Elementary School . heard the stories , but our mother found the proof in those old records , and that was really cool .”
June Markley was born in 1937 , and from the time she was 17 months old , her mother carried her on her hip along with six other children in the family .
“ We walked from out on Seventh Street to the old church ,” Markley said . “ I taught classes there for 15 years . I taught nine years and subbed for six . I helped with Bible school and Easter programs , and I directed all the programs . I had to take what was written in the Bible for our Bible School lessons . Now of course they buy Bible school kits for the kids .
“ My husband Dan would play Santa Claus at Christmas . He would come through the door and say , ‘ Jesus is the reason for the season ,’ and he would talk about Christ . One of the best things about this church was the choir . I miss that choir .”
Linda Scott was the director . June and Dan Markley have been very involved in getting the historical display ready for
the church anniversary .
“ Dan bought all the stuff in the foyer ,” June Markley said . “ We have pictures of all the ministers that have been here . We have a time capsule that we will open in 2025 that everyone put memorabilia in . We have an old Bible that belonged to Mrs . Johnson , who was one of the starters of our church . Dan found an archaeological hammer stone when they were digging to put in the cement , and it ’ s in the capsule . When we had our bell redone , Marge and I lifted the cover off of it , and it ’ s in there . I don ’ t know how people who don ’ t know Christ get along .”
The new church at 688 E . Main was built in 2003 . Current Pastor Ben Hartley and his wife Carolyn are from the Navarre area .
The 151st anniversary reception and historical display will be from 10:30 a . m . to noon on Sunday , Oct . 24 .
“ We want to invite everyone who has any connection to the church to come to the reception ,” Moyer said .
