Johnson takes over main preaching duties at The Tab

The Coshocton Christian Tabernacle has been going through a transition period and recently announced Nick Johnson will take over the main pastor duties .

Johnson grew up at The Tab .

“ I ’ ve been going here as long as I ’ ve been alive , and I ’ m 33 now ,” he said . “ My grandpa was part of starting it .”

Johnson graduated from River View High School and Mount Vernon Nazarene University . He ended up commuting during college and stayed connected to the church .

“ We had a pretty big youth adult program , and I helped out here and volunteered ,” Johnson said .

He earned his degree in social work and is a

licensed social worker .

“ I had a desire to help people ,” Johnson said . “ It brings me joy to serve and help others . I had people say I would become a pastor , but it wasn ’ t on my radar .”

Johnson did end up becoming the church ’ s youth pastor for a while and then transitioned to a role with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes . It wasn ’ t until the church recently transitioned to its elder model that the thought of being a pastor crossed Johnson ’ s mind .

“ Pastor Mike had given us warning to think ahead about his retirement ,” Johnson said . “ We tried some different things like rotating speakers , but nothing felt right . The idea came up that it would be nice to have someone from within step up .”

but at this point , he still didn ’ t think he was the

right person . Then one day John Strasser from Fellowship of Christian Athletes asked if he became pastor , how would things at FCA work . Shortly after that , Johnson filled in one Sunday and delivered the message at church . His wife Lauren hadn ’ t really been thrilled with the idea of him ever being a pastor but particularly enjoyed that Sunday ’ s message . Her feedback opened a conversation about him becoming pastor .

“ I brought it up to the board , and after I put my name in the hat , it was pretty much unanimous ,” Johnson said .

He started preaching one time a month . Then in the summer , he led the church service several times a month . In September he took over every Sunday . Now Johnson handles most of the preaching duties ,

and Pastor Mike Jansen has moved to a more administrative and ministerial role .

“ As a church our goal is to do things as biblically as we can ,” Johnson said . “ And we want to connect people to God and each other .”

The Coshocton Christian Tabernacle is located at 48245 Genesis Drive in Coshocton . The worship service is at 10 a . m . on Sundays .
