Enjoy fall activities in the midst of a pandemic

I am a grandfather who is still a dad . I was thinking about this time of year , which typically involves fall sports , the fair and Halloween . All these things have been disrupted due to the pandemic and limited all of us in unexpected ways that may have really cramped our “ normal ways ” of interacting with our children .
I was reflecting on my own childhood and what I was doing with my family and friends this time of year . It dawned on me there were a lot of activities I did that did not involve large numbers of people , and so I thought I would share or remind us we can really be doing a lot with a smaller group of people safely .
Raking leaves has to be on the list somewhere . Raking up a huge pile of leaves for the sole purpose of jumping into them has to be enjoyed by everyone at least sometime in their lives . To experience the crunch and the fresh smell of fallen leaves is a true delight . Or just hiding in them to jump out at a family member as they come to add to the pile can be both hilarious or funny depending on which end of this you are on . My mom always gave a satisfying “ yelp ”

Roasting hot dogs and making s ’ mores in the early twilight while moving closer to the fire is such a memorable activity . Something about a roasted hot dog straight from the stick to the bun makes it super delicious . Having a contest to see who can roast the perfect marshmallow to a golden brown without losing it to the gods of the fire pit can be a true noteworthy challenge . Managing the transfer of the mellow to the gram and placing the chocolate on top and another gram on can be the ultimate test in the early dusk of the evening .
Lately , I have revived a childhood game called croquet with my three grandchildren and their mom . We are currently playing a series of tournaments as a qualifying event to the World Championships . We have played courses all over the yard that have a wide variety of difficulties , as well as hand caps that

The moaning and groaning and the delight in victory can be heard all over my neighborhood and strike me as reminiscent of the “ Wide World of Sports ” commercial that would tout “ the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat .” Great grandmother and Grammy often sit in the spectator ’ s que and make comments about success and failures of the participants .
All of the mentioned activities reflect a stunning closeness as a result of being in the midst of a pandemic . All of this is both entertaining and “ a memory making ” set of activities that will be remembered as a positive from a time of unusual restrictions . My question is what family activities can you do that are easily incorporated into your life in an effort to combat the fatigue of isolation ? I encourage you to resurrect those “ gold standard ” activities you used to do : Monopoly , Clue , bike riding , family walks , horseshoes , bocce ball , Frisbee , flashlight tag , freeze tag and hula hoop , just to name a few . Have fun and enjoy .
