COSHOCTON – The junior fair beef breeding show , feeder calf and market beef show started off with the fitting class .
“ The kids get their animal ready for show by doing one side of their hair ,” said Logan Pyers , show advisor . “ They are showing the judge that they know how to do it .”
The show was held Tuesday afternoon , Oct . 2 , in Hunter Arena and the first contestants were given 15 minutes to get their animal show ready .
Kaytee Rice received first place in the junior beef fitting class .
“ Her family has grown up with beef cattle and she ’ s continuing the family tradition ,” said Carrie Hamlett , Rice ’ s mother .
Rice said this was her second year competing in the beef fitting class .
“ I was kind of nervous ,” she said . “ I ’ m more excited about the actual show .”
Pyers said after the fitting class they move into the breeding show and then the market show .
“ The breeding show is about which animals the judges think will produce the best calves and the market show is about which animals they think will have the best meat ,” he said . “ After those we move into showmanship .”
Showmanship is actually Pyers favorite part of the whole show .
“ No matter how much money you spend on your animal you still have a chance at winning showmanship if you work your butt off all summer with your animal ,” he said . “ It ’ s all about your hard work .”
Pyers believes that showing animals at the fair is a great way for kids to learn important lessons .
“ It teaches them responsibility and how to work hard ,” he said .
