City starts a new historic preservation commission
The City of Coshocton is taking another step to help those interested in preserving historical buildings in its community .
The historic preservation commission held its second meeting on Sept . 17 at city hall .
“ We wanted to be able to get more grant money to help people renovate historical buildings ,” said Jeff Corder , property code investigator for the City of Coshocton . “ One way we could do that was to have the city become a certified local government . The national and state historic societies do the certification , and there is a checklist you have to go through . One of the things on the checklist is to create a historic preservation commission .”
The city already has a designated historic district centered around Main Street and parts of Chestnut and Walnut streets . Property owners there are able to take advantage of grants and tax credits , but soon people outside of that area also will be able to seek assistance for renovation projects .
Members of the historic preservation commission are appointed by the mayor , but all meetings are open to the public . Liz Argyle was elected as chairman of the group and Tom Barcroft as vice chairman .
“ Anyone looking to get involved should get ahold of Our Town Coshocton ,” Corder said . “ They get the ball rolling on these historic groups .”
