By Josie Sellers
Ridgewood setter Ella Matusik recorded her 1,000th career assist on Oct . 14 during the varsity volleyball team ’ s home game against Sandy Valley .
“ I was aware I could get it during the game , but I didn ’ t really know how many I needed ,” the RHS junior said . “ It wasn ’ t until the midpoint of the season that it kind of hit me that I could do this if I worked hard .”
Matusik didn ’ t realize she had hit the 1,000 mark until after the set was over . “ My teammates came up and gave me hugs , and they announced it ,” she said . “ They gave me the ball and flowers . It was really sweet and special . The ball is going to go on my dresser in my room .”
This is Matusik ’ s second year playing varsity volleyball for the Lady Generals .
“ I like being involved in every single play ,” Matusik said . “ As the setter you always touch the ball . You have to have good communication with the coaches , the hitters and the passers . It ’ s a leadership role , and I really enjoy it .”
Matusik started playing volleyball in fifth grade and took on the job of setter in seventh grade . “ I tried out everything , but setting fit

me best ,” she said . “ I stuck with it and worked at it . I ’ d like to maybe break the career record for assists , and I always thought about playing in college , but I ’ m not sure yet .”
Matusik is very appreciative of all her coaches . “ I ’ d like to thank Brenda McCoy , DJ Bradford and Dan Smith for always pushing me in practice ,” she said . “ They are always helping me with everything , answering my questions and pushing me to do better .”
Matusik also is thankful for her teammates . “ They are always supporting me and there for me ,” she said . “ I wouldn ’ t want to play with anyone else .”
McCoy is very proud of Matusik for reaching this milestone in two seasons .
“ Last season we ran a 6-2 so the setting was split between two setters , but this season I decided to go with a 5-1 so Ella could run our offense ,” McCoy said . “ She does a great job converting the ball from the backcourt to get us back in system to attack . Going into the season , Ella had 333 assists from her sophomore year . The team kept asking how many more assists Ella needed as they were determined to help her reach her goal , especially the seniors who wanted to be there for the moment . At our last home match against Sandy Valley , the players were excited to present Ella with flowers and her 1,000th assist game ball .”
This year Matusik also was first in the IVC with 763 assists and fourth in Div . III for regular-season assists . She earned secondteam All IVC and secondteam District 5 honors . She finished the season with 1,096 career assists and is on pace to possibly break the career record at Ridgewood .
“ Ella now holds the records for most assists in a season , most sets in a season with 2,223 sets and most sets in a match with 159 sets against Coshocton this year ,” McCoy said . “ It ’ s nice to see a player with such a great attitude and work ethic succeed , and I can ’ t wait to see what Ella accomplishes next year with the returning players .”
