Cosmetology students spend time learning from Great Clips guests

By Josie Sellers
A two-day boot camp featuring special guests from Great Clips was held Oct . 21-22 for students in the cosmetology program at the Coshocton County Career Center .
“ The students learn a lot from hands-on education and really thrive ,” said Darla Wagner , cosmetology instructor .
Wagner worked with representatives from Great Clips and Lisa Akers , director of Coshocton CARES and advisor at the career center , to organize the training . CARES provided snacks , drinks and lunch for the event .
“ It has taken all of us to do this ,” Wagner said . “ The kids will receive certificates for their six hours in the lab , and they are having fun .”
Jodi Tomlinson and Hannah Cramblett from Great Clips were enjoying their time with the students .
“ We are working on different haircuts — long layers , razor cutting , clipper cuts ,” Tomlinson said . “ Hopefully with the seniors we can do some fun stuff . Yesterday we were working with the juniors on how to hold the comb and scissors . It was their first time cutting .”
Tomlinson said they have the biggest franchisee with 78 Great Clips stores spread throughout Ohio , Indiana , Kentucky and West Virginia .
“ We like to see the future of the beauty industry and make connections ,” Tomlinson said . “ We try to make them excited about the industry as a whole .”
Cramblett agreed . “ You can see that they are excited to cut hair , and we want to let them know what ’ s out there ,” she said .

“ I didn ’ t realize the position of your body and your stance made such a difference ,” Darling said .
McCoy actually interned with Great Clips during the summer and is getting ready to do one at Radiance Hair Salon . “ I like that you can do something different each day with this ,” she said . “ You can cut hair , do colors , perms . There ’ s such a variety , and I have a say in what I do and my future .”
Darling has worked with Nameste Hair Salon in Newcomerstown . “ I ’ ve learned so much there ,” she said . “ It ’ s really interesting and different than being in school .”

Big changes are ahead for the Pomerene Center for the Arts

Recently , the Pomerene Center for the Arts Board of Directors made the decision to move the center out of the Johnson-Humrickhouse home at 317 Mulberry St .
Too much time and treasure were being spent at the expense of the Pomerene ’ s mission .
Anne Cornell has been at the helm since 2000 . Through these two decades , the way people learn , make / consume art and access music has changed dramatically . Embracing that change , Cornell has led the organization asking , “ Who in the arts community is doing what and how ? What is not being done ? How and with whom can we collaborate to meet that need ?”
The Heritage Quilt Barn Trail , Little Social Histories in the old SOTA / Selby Building windows , the artPARK and ART CONNECTS ( education / manufacturing program artists in the schools and creating large-scale industrial art in the artPARK ) were born of this attitude .
Most recently with social gatherings being out and social distancing in , the Pomerene partnered with Coshocton Regional Medical Center on an arts and health project called Need A Mask , Take A Mask . The artwork for the installation was created by residents of Gentle- Brook Lafayette Meadows with guidance from habilitation specialist / artist Beth Dillehay . Lead artist Anne
Cornell zoomed in for the workshops and assembled the work in the Pomerene studio . Need A Mask , Take A Mask is currently being installed outside the medical center .
The Pomerene is ready to focus its mission of involving the community in the arts with this kind of community art making . Their goal is to bring people together — businesses , schools , artists and the general public — to create collaborative temporary public works of art . This will require a new studio space , and downtown locations are currently being explored . The Pomerene also is looking forward to the day when social gatherings are permitted again and its popular musical performances can resume in the artPARK .
The time line for moving out of the Johnson-Humrickhouse home ( left by Warner and Lora Pomerene to the benefit of the Johnson- Humrickhouse Museum and owned by the library board ) has not been finalized . The Pomerene will work to develop a strategic plan with Linda Linham , a former Coshocton resident who recently returned to the area .
A talented artist in her own right , Linham is the owner of LML Consulting and Successful Ventures and brings a wealth of experience in strategic and tactical planning with businesses and nonprofits .
