Everyday God : We all are going to die someday
I went to Tucson last week to attend a memorial service for Bob Treece . There was probably 100 people or so at the service . His wife Pam sat in the front row . There were children , grandchildren , nieces , nephews , business associates , golf buddies , neighbors , friends from church , community and more . For me , Bob was my father-in-law .
If you didn ’ t know Bob , it ’ s probably easier to speak honestly regarding the length of his years . If it was someone I didn ’ t know , I would readily admit 81 is a pretty good run . But for the ones grieving the loss , that Scott McCreery “ Five More Minutes ” song keeps rewinding in our minds .

little , innocent baby folk never live long enough to even draw a breath of air . Other times cranky , mean , old people seem like they are going to live forever . It matters not if you are rich or poor , smart or slow , chubby , skinny , a certain skin or hair color , bad teeth or a good appendicitis , death will definitely be along to collect each and every one of us , one of these days .
I ’ ve met folks who say they hate funerals , won ’ t go to them unless under conditions of extreme or supreme duress . “ Too depressing .” “ Such a shock and a shame .” “ I

don ’ t want to think about it .” I disagree . For a variety of reasons , I personally think it is a mistake to miss funerals . A funeral service provides an hour ’ s worth or so of some very important reflections . Miss it and one misses out on three very important opportunities .
The first funeral opportunity is to remember a life . At Bob ’ s service , all of his children and a close friend / business associate spoke . We were reminded of some common threads and themes in Bob ’ s life . Far as I know there was only one perfect person , Jesus , but most people have an opportunity to impact somebody . It was one of Bob ’ s best qualities : He valued and mentored people .

over again : Bob was so good at adding value to people . It made me think a bit , “ How am I doing about adding value to people ?” Hearing those stories , remembering some of “ Bob ’ s best ” was a good reminder for me to not slack up on trying to always be on point for giving my very best for listening , guiding and serving others .
A second opportunity from a funeral service is a chance to mourn a death . The last day I was in town I swung by to see how Pam , Bob ’ s widow , was doing . Piper the Pup was going nuts upon our arrival and well into the visit . It seemed she was letting everyone know she was on guard ; things had not been the same without “ Dad ” around . It made her sad , mad , anxious , and a bit scared and
scattered all at once .
Have you felt that way in those times ? We ’ ve all had people we so cared for leave their vessels of clay behind , gouging huge holes in our hearts in the process . It smarts , yet how often being around others in such times of loss is such a comfort . You never forget those family members and friends you cry with … never .
If the speakers at the funeral service are worth half their salt , the last thing we ’ re reminded of is the eternal promises of God . That picture collage , urn or casket has a might commanding presence front and center at any funeral service you will ever attend . That is until a good Bible-believing speaker steps up to the mic to remind us of what are truly the facts .
I don ’ t know about you , but those reflections leave me feeling pretty good anytime I hear any of these verses , and this is just a casual skip through one book of the Bible . If it ’ s been a while since you thought about your impending funeral , perhaps this might be a good time to do so . And if you don ’ t have the peace that surpasses all understanding that comes from the thought of your death colliding with those verses , this might be a good time to grab hold of it .
Check it out with a pastor near you soon because you just never know which side of the casket you will be on at the next funeral you attend . Isn ’ t it a comfort to know you and your loved ones could be with God ?
