Warne shares his journey with COVID

Justin Warne , a resident at Lafayette Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation Center , desired to share a personal story about his journey with COVID this year .
Warne said he has been a resident at Lafayette Pointe for seven years following a stroke in 2014 that led to 41 days in a nursing facility in Columbus .
“ You weren ’ t treated like a person there ,” he said . “ I felt like more of an inconvenience . I then came home for about two weeks , but my parents weren ’ t able to do anything for me because I was too big for them to move around . We decided to come here , and they immediately started therapy . I have been very happy here ever since . This has always felt like a home away from home because of how welcoming the staff is , and that includes everybody here .”
Warne was tested a few weeks ago and came back positive for COVID . He was transferred to a hospital in the Cleveland area that accepted COVID cases .
“ The hospital I went to in Cleveland was a whole different world compared to what you are used to in a little town like this ,” Warne said . “ The staff was rude and sometimes mean . It didn ’ t feel like they were there for the right reasons . That all changed when I got to come back here . The people here really care about you . You are not just another patient that they have to deal with . They really try to make it feel like a home away from home .
“ The therapy department is wonderful . They do a great job . They helped me walk , and they are doing it again this time . I ’ m still weak from COVID and not able to do as well as I would like to , but I was able to take a few steps . They keep motivating me and coming up with different things for me to try , and we ’ re getting there .”
Warne grew up in West Lafayette and has lived there his whole life .
“ I love it here and love the area and the people ,” he said . “ Coming here is just like coming home . I ’ m very thankful to be back here again . COVID was a wild trip . It is nothing to play with , and I was unlucky enough to get it . Once I got back here , it didn ’ t take long to feel

like myself again . It ’ s because the people here took very good care of me . Everyone — the dietary staff , laundry , maintenance — everyone has taken very good care of me for quite a while , and they still do .
“ I have been very lucky . The faculty and staff make this just feel like another home . This is a fine place to be . If you need this kind of assistance , this is the place to go . They are very welcoming . They make this as close to home as they can , and I am very happy to be here .”
Misty Aberegg , admissions and marketing director , said , “ I delivered Justin to the hospital in Cleveland and picked him up . It was awful . They were very mean to him . They downgraded him , told him to leave them alone and stop hitting the call light , telling him , ‘ I ’ m not coming back in here .’ They lost his wheelchair within 24 hours of his admission . It was a $ 4,000 wheelchair that I delivered with him . They said I never delivered a chair . It took them two hours to locate the chair . It was off the COVID unit in another part of the building . They were letting other people use it .”
New Lafayette Pointe director Jay Olinger said , “ This is my third time working with Lafayette Pointe . Recently , I served in the hospice industry , so coming back with COVID and working through COVID has been eye opening and difficult . With the support our facility has from our corporation , from all the floor staff members , we have been able to get through it successfully . We are very proud of what we do here . We are COVID free , and that is something we are very excited about .
“ In a world that seems to be booming with COVID right now , we were able to get rid of it here . It ’ s exciting , very exciting . Visitation is open . We do require everyone to follow CDC guidelines : masking , temperature check on entering and sign-in .”
Director of nursing Kathy Jones lives in Coshocton with her husband and has been in healthcare for 35 years .
“ I ’ ve just been here three weeks ; we have a great team here . We take a lot of pride here . I knew when the opportunity came that this would be a building I would like to come to . This facility has a lot of credibility . I worked with Jay Olinger at Rivers as administrator , so I knew we had a great team ,” Jones said . “ There was a current COVID outbreak between the staff and corporation , but they had it completely under control when I got here . We were running IV antibodies on the residents that did get the virus , and we had a positive outcome from that . We just had our focus infection control survey , and we have no citations , and we are now clear of COVID and back to visitations .”
“ It was this new management that got us through the fight , and it was only through extremely hard work and dedication that we made it through ,” Aberegg said .
