Military Appreciation Day
By Marianne Austin
The Coshocton Salvation Army hosted its annual Military Appreciation Day on Nov . 12 , which offered veterans and their spouses a breakfast of biscuits and gravy , scrambled eggs , and orange juice and coffee .
Major Tom Clark of the Salvation Army said , “ Every year we like to honor veterans , and we have a longstanding partnership with the U . S . Military going back to WWI where our famous doughnut girls served doughnuts to the men on the front lines . Now we want to say thank you . We appreciate them and honor them for their service . We want to let them know that , and we can never do enough to say thank you . This is a small token to honor them and to give them a chance to share memories and get together with other veterans .”
Tom Dile , a veteran and volunteer for the Salvation Army , puts up a display every year of the 1,093 items he has collected in over 46 years including equipment , posters and photos from the armed forces . Dile served 20 years in the Army including Desert Storm and collected for 26 years afterward . “ I ’ ve been collecting most of my life ,” he said .
Dile spent 9 1 / 2 years in Germany and enjoyed every minute of it . “ We do this to show our appreciation ,” he said .
Volunteer Carol Madison is responsible for the chapel bulletin board each month . “ It ’ s all veterans this month ,” she said .
Madison posts photos of local vets and even has a military Boyd ’ s Bear displayed on the table in front of the board , along with a copy of the veterans prayer — The Final Inspection .
Jerry Haywood , Marine sergeant E-5 , shared his memories of his time in the Military . “ I went to boot camp Aug . 4 , 1967 , and six months later I was in Vietnam for 13 months ,” he said . “ The Marines were the smallest branch in numbers , so we had to spend an extra month , which was difficult in a lot of ways because a lot of guys were injured , wounded and some killed in that extra 30 days . I was stationed on a helicopter carrier , and we ran our operations from country back out to the carrier . I was fortunate to never have been wounded . I had a knee injury , but I was thankful that I came back with my leg and my life .
“ A lot of guys had it a lot tougher than I did . The toughest part was you didn ’ t know if you would ever come back home . I knew if I could survive 13 months , I would get to go home , where the greatest generation in WWII had no idea whether they were ever coming home or when it would be . I ’ m very proud of being a Marine because it ’ s earned , never given .”
