Veterans Day celebration held

By Marianne Austin
Veterans and people who love veterans including five buses transporting Coshocton City Schools students came to honor all who have served in the U . S . military at the Veterans Day Ceremony held Nov . 11 .
Pastor Andrew Bird from Coshocton Church of the Nazarene opened the ceremony on the Coshocton Court Square with a prayer for those who in the past and present have labored in peril and personal loss for this great nation . He gave thanks for those who served their country in its hour of need , those who gave their lives and those who serve today in a prayer asking God to heal the land .
The Walhonding Rube Band played the national anthem , followed by a moment of silence for fallen comrades and those who serve today .
“ According to the 2017 American Community survey , there are 18 million veterans with about half enrolled in veteran healthcare programs ,” said guest speaker Lynn Leach , vice president of Blue Star Mothers . “ Troops that were engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan differ from veterans of previous conflicts in that there are more women , parents of young children , and reserve and national guard . They often serve a longer deployment with shorter intervals at home between missions , creating new needs among veterans .
“ Women in the military have a higher need for mental healthcare compared with women who served in other wars . The trauma of war is never pretty , and we owe our veterans our unwavering support in caring for their every need . We need to have your back as a community . You have the fortitude and courage to step up and answer the call of your country . No matter if you served in war or peace time , your service matters and is appreciated . We are eternally grateful .”
A resident of West Lafayette , Sam Scott has always shown support for the United States military , both present and past , having come from a military background . Scott sang a United States Military theme song medley and asked members of each branch to stand . He is the son of retired Air Force Sgt . Joseph Scott ; grandson of retired Air Force

Sgt . Victor Champaign and the late John Scott , United States Navy veteran ; and great-grandson of the late William Patterson , U . S . Army corporal .
Scott traces his lineage of veterans back to the American Revolution and the War of 1812 .
Veterans Service officer Zac Miller introduced the honored speaker for the event , Brady Melear , who is originally from Georgia and now residing in Warsaw . Melear enlisted in the Army in 2004 at the age of 22 . In 2005 he was deployed to Iraq with the 40th engineer company , 66th Engineer Battalion out of Germany . In 2010 he was deployed again in support of Operation Bring Freedom with the 95th Engineer Battalion to Afghanistan . He is medically discharged and retired as a staff sergeant , having earned many ribbons , awards and medals . He is the state outreach coordinator for Freedom Hunters .
It wasn ’ t until after joining the Army at the age of 22 and serving for 10 years that Melear fully understood what Veterans Day means . After multiple deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan at the height of both , he lost friends , he lost parts of himself and lost what home really was .
“ It was the best job ever ; it was the hardest to walk away from and the hardest to fully say goodbye to . This is what Veterans Day really means ,” Melear said . “ Every veteran , regardless of how much time they served , sacrifices something of themselves . Every one of us gives something up . It ’ s the people you served with that are more like family . It was a sense of honor and duty , and when you leave the service and become a vet , you leave so much more behind . It ’ s a day to honor those that we served with — those that came home and those that paid the ultimate sacrifice .
“ A large part of us is truly gone — the people we left to stand watch for us , the ones we couldn ’ t help change for the better and the ones we couldn ’ t save on the next deployment . Today is more than free meals at Chili ’ s or the blooming onions at Outback or sales at the retail stores and barbecues at home . When I left the service after a severe incident , my life was cut short and my days as a vet started . It was hard to find my way . I lost my family , I lost friends and , most importantly , I lost myself .”
Melear has since married his long lost love and gives credit to his wife and three children for saving him . He also credits his involvement as outreach coordinator with Freedom Hunters , an organization dedicated to honoring the nation ’ s finest .
“ It ’ s a day to look back to where I ’ ve come from and the people I served with ,” he said . “ If you see a veteran with a hat on , a shirt or a pin , be sure to say hello and thank them for their service .”
