Youth share thoughts on veterans

By Jen Jones
With Veterans Day approaching , several area youth shared their thoughts about veterans they know or about the bravery of all veterans .
Braidee Slaughter , 13 , said , “ My greatgrandfather is a veteran , and the word I would use to describe him is selfless .”
Emme Dreher , 8 , said a veteran is “ a person willing to risk their life for the freedom of our country .”
Stella Dreher , 6 , said , “ They are heroes .”
Fletcher Dreher ,
4 , said , “ A veteran is strong and brave .”
E l e v e n - y e a r - o l d Noah Warren Smoulder is very proud of being named after a veteran . “ I think veterans are brave people , and I think it ’ s cool I was named after a veteran , my great-pappy , Warren Hunt . He was a medic in World War II and helped people who were wounded .”
Gabby Schlabach , 14 , said veterans are brave because they want to protect or help the United States . “ What makes them
brave enough to do it is the fact they get into it when they know they may not survive , or they do survive it and are traumatized or with a disability . A simple way to put it is they are risking their lives to save American lives .”
Regan Foster enjoys hearing stories her uncle , Don Foster , shares with her . “ I think it was a cool , brave , heroic thing for him to join the Army . His stories are interesting , and I learned interesting facts about the job , like that he was a military police soldier of the year and top sniper .”
“ My dad , Travis Brill , is a U . S . Marine . Over the years he ’ s shared many stories with me — devastating , heroic and some happy
