National Home Visiting Week was celebrated
The inaugural National Home Visiting Week took place April 21-25. It was a time to celebrate and recognize home visitors and the positive impact they make on maternal and child health outcomes.
Locally, home visitors are housed in the new additions of Coshocton and Knox Board of DD buildings. They work for Help Me Grow Home Visiting under the BDDs in both Knox and Coshocton. Shana Miller is the program manager, and Tisha King is the home visiting supervisor.
King’ s home visitors are Roxanne Berry, Mindy Edie, Tammy Fortney and Angie Smith.
“ Their compassion, professionalism and dedication to supporting families truly stands out and makes a lasting difference in the lives of those they serve and in the lives of those of us lucky enough to work alongside them,” King said.“ Their role is so much more than a job. It’ s about showing up for families during some of their most vulnerable moments and helping them build safe, supportive and nurturing environments for their children. That takes not only skill and patience, but also a deep level of empathy. They bring all of that and more to the table every single day.”
The impact of the home visitors’ work is further underscored by the outcomes demonstrated through the Healthy Families America Model:
— Each year HFA serves approximately 70,000 families and 100,000 children, conducting nearly 865,000 home visits across 38 states and territories.
— Programs like HFA have been shown to significantly reduce child maltreatment, with only 3.3 % of HFA participants in a key study reporting substantiated abuse, compared to 8.5 % in the control group.
— Children who participate in HFA are more likely to be ready for school, with fewer needing special education services or being retained in early grades.
“ These results are not just numbers,” King said.“ They represent real lives changed, real futures shaped and real hope offered.”
