The Gathering Group is beginning again this year with a summer schedule to learn the art of preserving flowers .
The first get-together was off to a chilly start on April 15 at the Lake Park picnic pavilion . The Gathering Group ’ s introduction meeting discussed things like basic drying methods with information handouts , samples of dried flowers and finished items displayed while answering questions .
Each get-together will be at 10 a . m ., the best time for cutting , after the morning dew has dried . As the weather determines how plants grow and produce

blooms , the locations will vary throughout the community , and outdoor social distancing with mask wearing will be in effect .
Each get-together will include current and next month ’ s flowers to dry , preserving methods , handouts of information , a monthly topic and a creative activity . Meetings will be once in May and June , twice in July and August , and once in September and October . Assistants this year include Connie Miller , MJ Mitchel and Kathy Gwinn from Roscoe Village ’ s Garden Elves volunteer group .
The topic for Thursday , May 20 is growing everlasting annuals in containers and about annuals . This meeting will be held at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds Rotary Pavilion . You don ’ t need a large garden . Container growing annuals and herbs will be demonstrated with a variety of annuals for drying on display with purchasing locations listed .
The stages of a flower ’ s blossom for best cutting results will be explained with best drying methods for each one . Other summer topics will include perennials , weeds , autumn items , cones , pressing , decorating , cutting times , methods , flower ’ s bloom stages for cutting , growing , care and answering questions .
This group is for anyone to learn about drying and preserving flowers as gifts or for a display . It ’ s outdoors so people can learn how to do things on their own , like how to grow flowers in a container . Each flower has different stages of bloom and when to cut them and what to do next .
This is a community thing , not a club . There is no cost .
The purpose is to learn and experience the joy of gathering flowers to preserve , dry and decorate under the guidance of Diana Swigert , who was introduced to gardening in her childhood . Her grandmother and mother encouraged her natural talent of growing and making things from nature . She was employed by Roscoe Village until her retirement in 2014 , and this venture became the perfect fit for her because she enjoys growing , drying , preserving , creating and teaching the basic skills taught to her as a child .
“ This whole thing is to inspire the joy of creating ,” Swigert said . “ It is very positive , and you can join after the introduction meeting . This is a hands-on learning experience . We are not all doing the same thing like in a workshop . Just bring whatever you have , and we will be there to guide you .”
Call Swigert at 740-622- 2394 for more information . There is no cost for this group . Registering is not required but would help with information handouts and seating plans .
