Budget-friendly baseball options
By Todd Stumpf The Beacon
As you can no doubt tell by the weather, it’ s baseball season. The boys of summer are back.
And the local nine, the Guardians, are back too, and if you have a spare $ 500, you can take your family to a game— once.
As you may have seen in various news reports, parking near Progressive Field was going for anywhere from $ 70- $ 90. Imagine how much the dogs and beer cost, let alone the baseball.
Don’ t despair, though. You needn’ t be a millionaire to afford baseball. You’ ve got choices, and several are closer than downtown Cleveland. Maybe all of them, depending on where you’ re reading this.
The Class AAA Columbus Clippers( Cleveland Guardians farm club) and Toledo Mudhens( Detroit Tigers), Class AA Akron RubberDucks( Guardians), and Class A Lake County Captains( Guardians) are all within a short drive of the area, and all feature tomorrow’ s Major League stars.
There are two things, other than baseball, you’ re guaranteed to find at all of them: food and fun.
“ Ballpark food is always an important part of any baseball experience and one of my favorite parts,” said Jason Lockhart, Mudhens director of broadcast and media.“ We’ ve got an exciting season ahead of us with something for everyone.”
Closest of the bunch, the RubberDucks play in the heart of downtown Akron, an easy drive from any direction. The Ducks are famous for fireworks, with displays after each Friday and Saturday home game.
This year Akron also will feature second baseman Travis Bazzana, the

Canal Park in Akron is one of several Minor League Baseball stadiums within driving distance. Each stadium offers affordable pricing and something unique to visitors.
No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 amateur draft. Get there early in the year to see him; he won’ t likely be in the Rubber( Duck) City for long.
“ Fans will see something different every night at Canal Park, whether it be one of the incredible promotions we have planned this year, a brandnew in-between inning contest, the incredible food we have at the ballpark or just the action on the field,” said Jimmy Farmer, RubberDucks manager of media relations.“ A trip to see the RubberDucks is always a great night of affordable family fun.”
Down south fans can visit Columbus, where the Clippers call Huntington Park home. As a AAA affiliate, the Clippers will feature players a step away from the big leagues, as well as those who have already been in“ The Show” but needed a bit more seasoning, along with the occasional big-league star on a rehab assignment.
“ We pride ourselves on continuing to offer affordable family entertainment for fans of all ages,” said Chris Sprague, Clippers director of media relations.“ We are known worldwide for our Tansky Tuesday Dime-A-Dog Nights, and Clippers fans enjoy watching the next generation of Cleveland Guardians stars right here in Columbus.”
Where the Guardians offer occasional dollar dog nights, the Clippers do them 10 times better, offering those dime-a-dog nights Sprague mentioned on numerous occasions. They also offer $ 5 Fridays, where beer connoisseurs can sip their favorite brew for a sawbuck.
Lastly, there is the Lake County Captains. Playing in Classic Park in Eastlake, the Captains boast the youngest future stars in the Guardians’ organization. You might not see them in Cleveland for two or three years, but some will be on the big club before you know it.
