Last month the United Methodist Church reversed its long-held position on homosexuality by embracing same-sex marriage and lesbian or gay pastors in their pulpits . This was billed as big news , except it wasn ’ t . In the past two years , 7,600 United Methodist congregations left the denomination in anticipation of this inevitable change in their denominational course . And they weren ’ t the first to do so . In August 2009 the Lutherans made a similar decision , followed by the Presbyterians in June 2014 .
The big news , however , is not about same-sex marriage , gender confusion or even church leadership ; it ’ s about the deep moral dive we ’ ve experienced in North America as we ’ ve witnessed these mainline denominations as they have followed this pagan ( non-Christian ) culture into its present-day abyss . How has this great calamity come to pass in the fullness of day ? Because of what was taking place under the cover of darkness .
Vance Havner nailed it in the 1960s when he said , “ The devil has done more damage as an angel of light than he has ever done as a roaring lion .”
You see while the masses of the biblically illiterate made the UMC split about homosexuality , the professors of seminaries and denominational leaders were busy doing the real damage by undermining the authority of Scripture ( II Tim 3:16 ), denying its power ( Hebrews 4:12-13 ; II Tim 3:1-9 ) and leading people astray ( Romans 1:18-32 ).
