National EMS Week being celebrated

May 16 is the beginning of National EMS Week . President Gerald Ford first authorized EMS Week in 1974 as an opportunity to recognize emergency medical service providers for the work they do in communities . The theme for this year ’ s EMS Week is “ This Is EMS : Caring for Our Communities .”
It is estimated there are more than 1 million EMS providers in the United States caring for their communities today .
Coshocton County EMS began operating on Feb . 16 , 1976 , when the newly formed Emergency Squads in Coshocton and Keene joined with the Warsaw and West Lafayette Emergency Squads . In the beginning the ambulances were staffed with volunteers from the community . Much has changed over the past 45 years . Coshocton County EMS is now staffed by 37 full-time and 16 part-time employees , working from stations in Coshocton , Warsaw and West Lafayette .
“ This past year has been
a difficult year for everyone ,” said Todd Shroyer , EMS director . “ Our nation ’ s healthcare system was put to the test as we battled an enemy we knew little about . There were more questions than answers as we responded to a worldwide pandemic , something that most of us had never experienced .”
The members of Coshocton County EMS , like every other EMS provider , found themselves on the front lines of the fight . Routine procedures like providing oxygen to a patient with COVID became a very dangerous task .
“ We had to learn to work in layers of personal protective equipment , and we depended on that PPE to protect us and our families ,” Shroyer said . “ COVID wasn ’ t the only challenge . We still had people getting injured . We still had patients suffering cardiac events . Illness didn ’ t take a break during COVID , and neither did EMS . We knew that every time we responded to a 911 call , every time we cared for a patient , we risked getting a deadly virus and potentially taking it home to our families . But as our theme for this year says , this is what EMS is all about , ‘ Caring for Our Communities .’ Crews never wavered in their commitment to provide emergency medical care to their community .”
Over the next week , EMS will honor all of its EMTs and paramedics for their service . Several of them will receive special recognition for specific calls where their actions saved the life of someone in cardiac arrest or helped to deliver a baby .
“ We also are giving the Coshocton County Star of Life Award to recognize individuals who went above and beyond to save the life of another ,” Shroyer said .
The first individual to receive the Coshocton County EMS Star or Life Award is Charli Landis . She witnessed a child being struck by a vehicle . She rushed to the child . The child had stopped breathing and had no pulse . Landis provided CPR to the child , and when the first of the CCEMS crew arrived a few minutes later , the child had a pulse .
“ As we recognize our emergency medical technicians during EMS Week and thank them for their efforts , we also want to say thank you to our community ,” Shroyer said . “ So many in our community stepped up to help and support EMS this past year . When we couldn ’ t find toilet tissue for our stations , every county school district donated a case of toilet paper for EMS stations . Several local businesses donated PPE and other supplies . Wiley Organics provided pallets of hand sanitizer . So many people brought food to our stations including Mr . and Mrs . Speaks , who made a home-cooked meal and brought it to our station every week . We are incredibly thankful to our community for your support as we continue ‘ Caring for Our Community .’”
