Music fills downtown Coshocton during annual event
By Josie Sellers
The annual free Dogwood Lunch Concerts hosted by the Pomerene Center for the Arts gave people the opportunity to hear music and get food May 7-10 in the artPARK .
This year the music was provided by the Coshocton High School jazz band and choir , the River View High School jazz band , Caribbean Drum and Certified Gold Ensembles , the Ridgewood High School choirs , and the Ridgewood High School jazz band .
“ I think it is nice for our community to allow the opportunity for students to perform and see that they are valued ,” said Mickie Galajda , Pomerene board member . “ The schools work so hard to prepare students for performances .”
Instead of holding their regular meeting at the Elks , the Kiwanis Club gathered at the May 8 concert featuring musical groups from River View High School .
“ We support the youth of the community , so we try to do this every year ,” said Kevin Lyngaas , Kiwanis treasurer .
Pomerene Artistic Director Anne Cornell was excited to have a beautiful day for the River View concerts .
“ Thank you for all your dedication and all the hard work you put in to be able to come out here and share with us ,” she said to the students .
Cornell believes it ’ s important to give all three schools the opportunity to share their students ’ musical talents at a location in the center of the community .
“ There is nothing like music to pull you up when you are down ,” she said . “ It can bring adults and kids together too . Music is a bug we want our kids to catch .”
Lunch at the concerts was grilled-cheese sandwiches made on the Pomerene ’ s new smokeless flat-top wood grills . The sandwiches were made with Pearl Valley Cheese and included a side of chips and a pickle for $ 10 .
“ We are hoping to bring the grills out for our street dances this summer , and next year at Dogwood , we ’ d like to do gourmet grilled-cheese sandwiches and have guest chefs making them ,” Cornell said .
She encouraged people to start thinking now about their favorite grilled-cheese combinations .
