River View FFA members honored at banquet

By Marianne Austin
The FFA banquet is a very important event . It is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate all of the effort that has gone into the program over that last year .
“ With the year that we have endured , this was a great way to showcase the many accomplishments of our students ,” Allyssa Mullett said . “ For the senior members , it is a chance to reflect on how far they have come in the organization and take time to recognize them for all of the hard work they have put into the chapter . I am very proud to have recognized all of our degree recipients and award winners . Every member contributes something to our chapter , and that is what makes our chapter what it is . As the advisor my greatest joys come from the success of my students .”
There were approximately 300 FFA members , parents and guests present at the annual awards ceremony of the River View FFA chapter .
Sixty-two students received the Greenhand Degree given to first-year high school students who have demonstrated a thorough understanding of the history and purpose of FFA and have satisfactory plans for a supervised agricultural experience .
Thirty-six students received the Chapter FFA Degree . This goes to students who satisfactorily completed 180 hours ( or the equivalent ) of systematic school instruction in agricultural education at or above the ninth-grade level . Honored members were Shelby Barnett , Hunter Bowman , Macey Geog , Gage Haines , Jessica Hartsock , Dannielle Latham , Dilyn Tumblin and Haylee Wolford .
This year ’ s state degree recipients are the individuals who earned the American FFA Degree in 2020 . These members were recognized at the National FFA Convention this past October : Michela Greten , Hunter Haines , Hayden McCoy and Lindsey Moran .

The pandemic caused many events and activities to be canceled last spring including the 2020 annual banquet . Awards were presented to some of last year ’ s recipients along with this year ’ s recipients .
This year ’ s secondyear members earned both their Greenhand and Chapter degrees . This year ’ s third-year members received their chapter degree and Junior Achievement Award . The 2020 state degree recipients received recognition on the state level during
the 2020 virtual convention , but the chapter recognized these students at the ceremony on Saturday .
River View had two state degree recipients this year , and this raises the total to 251 state degrees since 1965 . This year ’ s state degree recipients were Haley Erwin and Alyssa Moran .
Dalton Summers was given honorary membership at the ceremony . Summers has supported the FFA program in many ways .
“ He was always willing to listen and learn about our school and lab and supported the projects that we do ,” Dannielle Latham said .
Honorary membership can include farmers , school superintendents , principals , members of boards of education , chapter advisors , teachers , staff members in agricultural education , business people , and others who are helping to advance agricultural education and the FFA and who have rendered outstanding service .
