TV shows from the past bring back memories

By Josie Sellers
They don ’ t make them like they used to , and that includes TV shows .
Many classics were wholesome and funny without being inappropriate and left lasting memories for people of all ages .
“ I miss the Christmas shows with Bob Hope , Bing Crosby and Andy Williams ,” Diane McCormick said . “ They made Christmas extra special .”
Cherie Reveal misses “ The Muppet Show .”
“ It was clean and funny comedy ,” she said .
Steve Oster has good memories of “ Laverne & Shirley .”
“ It was two people trying to make something of themselves while maintaining a wonderful friendship and having fun times ,” he said . “ It was a true test of friendship .”
Linda Young Wells didn ’ t have a TV , but when she moved to
Ohio , her neighbors did .
“‘ I Love Lucy ’ immediately became my favorite ,” she said . “ I loved her silly shenanigans . I still watch my VHS tapes of the show .”
Irene Linn looked forward to Saturday mornings when she was a child .
“ Good shows like ‘ Lassie ,’ ‘ My Friend Flicka ,’ ‘ Roy Rogers ,’ ‘ Mickey Mouse ’ and many more ,” she said . “( The TV ) was in black
and white and only got 7 and 9 .”
Karen Chanay recalls watching “ The Wonderful World of Disney ” every Sunday night , and “ American Bandstand ” was a favorite of many .
“ Loved the dance moves ,” Linda Moats said .
Diane Horn also was a fan of the show .
“ I watched ‘ American Bandstand ’ with my mom visiting a friend ’ s house ,” she said . “ I also liked ‘ The Little Rascals ,’ ‘ Captain Kangaroo ,’ ‘ Mickey Mouse Club ,’ and cartoons like the ‘ Flintstones ,’ ‘ Yogi Bear ,’ ‘ Tom and Jerry ,’ and the ‘ Jetsons .’ I liked Shirley Temple movies and gave my doll to my daughter . I just like how life was back then .”
Karen West liked watching “ Ozzie and Harriett ,” “ The Donna Reed Show ,” “ Father Knows Best ,” and “ The Roy Rogers Show .”
“ Guess that aged me pretty well ,” she said .
“ Bonanza ” was a favorite of Tomma Bordenkircher .
“ We all sat down and watched it together and had our bowl of ice cream for a snack ,” she said . “ Good memory .”
Other shows mentioned were “ Rawhide ,” “ Batman ,” “ Lost in Space ” and one of Carole Beck ’ s favorites , “ The Mickey Mouse Club .”

“ Doug was going through the program , and it allowed us to be on the same page learning at the same time , have a shared experience and share those experiences with others ,” she said . “ I want to share that knowledge with our daughters to grow their

connection with Coshocton County , instill pride in their community and where they live .”
Karla Schaefer also looks to the networking opportunities as she prepares to return to work , as well as collaborating with other adults and learning about opportunities to serve .
Both Doug and Karla Schaefer have an interesting perspective of the community and county , as they grew up here but left and returned . Their viewpoints are unique as they remained connected to Coshocton County through their multitude of visits to see extended family members over the last 30 years .
When asked his view of the community , Doug Schaefer talked about the potential in the community and said the right conditions need to be set to draw businesses and industry to a community .
Like many , he sees Coshocton at a turning point with Main Street coming back and said it ’ s better now than on other visits home . “ There are opportunities for change if we want it to change ,” he said .
He stressed a need for pride in the community , pride in the institutions , and said everyone needs to be all in .
When asked her view of the community , Karla Schaefer said they came back because they knew it was a good place to raise a family . “ People work hard , genuinely care for the community and do their best to support each other ,” she said .
She said a hindrance is the decline in the socioeconomic system and that

To make the county stronger , Doug Schaefer stressed the need for improved infrastructure to draw industry and those wanting to move here . “ We need to support our small businesses too ,” he said . “ Spend local . Buy local whenever possible . Contract local . Those businesses will grow and hire more people . Make it attractive to encourage youth to return after graduation .”
Karla Schaefer also stressed the need to support local businesses but stated the need for the county to have more of an online presence . “ Coshocton County has a lot going on , but it ’ s hard to find information , especially when you ’ re an outsider ,” she said .
When trying to move back home , she found it difficult to find the resources she needed online . “ The information available on the internet is limited . It doesn ’ t give a big picture of all that Coshocton has to offer ,” she said . “ How do people find out about the resources ?”
Both Doug and Karla Schaefer would recommend Leadership Coshocton for others .
“ It gives you a better understanding of the community , even if you ’ ve lived here your whole life ,” Doug Schaefer said . “ It gives you a broad scope of the community that you wouldn ’ t get if you didn ’ t put effort into it — the networking , meeting community leaders and businesses , opening doors that ( we ) didn ’ t know existed to knock on , learning what makes the county tick .”
