Baby Boomers remember summers of their youth

By Marianne Austin
Memories of the simple pleasures of past summers bring back visions of unstructured days of freedom to run and play , sleeping in , staying up late , and no homework for Baby Boomers .
Kids used to meet up with their friends and ride their bikes all over town . Rollerblades were somewhere in the future . Roller skates with a ball bearing where the skaters needed to wear sturdy shoes with leather soles to clamp the skates to their shoes using a skate key were all the rage . They were heavy , but kids managed to maneuver them . They usually kept the key on a string worn around their neck .
Jumping around on
a Pogo Stick was fun if you could keep your balance . Hula Hoops made by Wham-O came out in the late ‘ 50s , and they are pretty good entertainment because they ’ re still around , as well as jump ropes and blowing bubbles .
Veronica Albritton said her favorite activities included swimming at Lake Park , riding her horse , riding her bike the mile or mile and a half to her friends ’ houses and reading lots of books .
Linda Weber said she looked forward to riding her horse all day every day , playing in the creek and hanging out with her friends who also had horses .
“ Every summer we would take a trip to visit my grandparents and
cousins in Kentucky ,” she said . “ When I was a teenager , I looked forward to summer so I could work in the vineyards in Hartsgrove , Ohio for 25 cents an hour .”
Mark and Tina Arron said one of their favorite summer memories was taking the children to the state of Delaware to visit their grandpa for a week .
“ We would go to Ocean City on the beach and boardwalk ,” he said . “ They had shops , rides , entertainment , flying kites , putt-putt golf . Any summer entertainment you could think of , we knew it was going to be there . Eating boardwalk fries at Thrashers . We just enjoyed the sun and sand and just getting together with Tina ’ s
dad and spending time with family .”
Judy Atha said , “ I enjoyed helping my grandmother put in her garden . I helped my grandfather bale hay . I liked riding my bicycle , going swimming at Sunset and Seneca Lake , attending Grange
Camp at Lake Erie . I just loved the essence of summer : birds singing , people visiting from church and icecream socials , which I remember taking turns cranking the paddles to make the delicious treat . On special days kids could go to the
pool or get ice-cream cones with not a care in the world . And at night , surrounded by lightning bugs , we would look up in the night sky at the stars and listen to the crickets chirp . Little did we know what a gift these cherished memories would be .”
