Meet Doug and Karla Schaefer , LCC Class of 2021

Doug Schaefer is a 1988 graduate of Riverview High School . He joined the U . S . Marine Corps in 1989 and attended recruit training at Parris Island , South Carolina . He served 30 years in the corps and retired in spring 2019 at the rank of sergeant major .
During his career Doug Schaefer served as an infantryman , drill instructor and
formal school instructor . He has been stationed on both coasts and Hawaii , deployed eight times , and served in all three Marine divisions and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing . He is a veteran of Desert Storm , Kosovo and Afghanistan .
As a sergeant major , Doug Schaefer has had the privilege to lead Marines serving with 2nd Battalion ,
9th Marines ( Afghanistan ), Marine Wing Support Squadron 271 , Marine Air Control Squadron 2 , 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and U . S . Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command . He retired in 2019 with 30 years of service in the Marine Corps .

School graduate . She attended the Ohio State University before joining the Naval Reserves and served eight years as a hospital corpsman . Doing so provided means to graduate without debt , and she completed her education at Eastern Carolina University with a Bachelor of Social Work . While she and Doug attended high school together , they reconnected and married in 1998 .
Initially , Karla Schaefer worked in Child Protective Services , but when they started a family , she chose to be a homemaker and home-school their children . Their daughter had dyslexia , and home-schooling allowed for a cohesive , classical Christian education when they would move every 24-36 months due to Doug ’ s career in the military .

Karla and Doug Schaefer , members of the Class of 2021 of the Leadership Coshocton County , are both graduates of River View High School .
Coshocton County Veterans Office as a veterans service officer . The office is located in the Coshocton County Courthouse at 318 Main St . and is staffed by accredited service officers who , at no cost to the veteran , can assist the veteran or their dependents in filing for VA benefits including VA healthcare enrollment , service-connected compensation , nonserviceconnected disability pension , survivor ’ s pension , death and burial benefits , headstones , education , home loan guarantee certificates , vocational rehabilitation , copies of lost or destroyed records and medals , and any other benefits available from state and federal sources .
Temporary financial assistance is available to eligible veterans . The applicant must be a bona fide resident who has lived in the county for at least 90 days prior to the date of application for financial assistance . Transportation is provided to VA healthcare appointments to those veterans who are unable to drive themselves .
Karla Schaefer facilitates high school science classes with the Excellence in Learning co-op , a homeschooling co-op based in Newark . She also has taught public speaking to the Gavel Club , a “ youth ” Toastmasters in Licking County .
Doug Schaefer is a member of the Coshocton County Honor Guard , American Legion Post 634 ( Warsaw ), AMVETS Post 36 , DAV Chapter 74 and the Marine Raider Association . He assists with the New Life Ministries Food Pantry , the Perry Chapel Youth Group and First Step .
Karla Schaefer is president of the Licking County Toastmasters , is a member of the Christian education board at Perry Chapel and serves the youth group . Like her husband , she also assists with the New Life Ministries Food Pantry .
Doug Schaefer decided to join Leadership Coshocton County to learn more about the community . “ You can ’ t help others if you don ’ t know what ’ s needed ,” he said .
He said he was fortunate to serve the country and said one of his key lessons was humans are more important than hardware . He hoped to learn who is who in the community , get the “ pulse ” of the environment and reconnect with the community . He also views participating in LCC as a great networking opportunity .
“ Coshocton County has a lot more to offer than 30 years ago ,” he said .
