The Muskingum Valley Educational Service Center is receiving $ 961,150 in grants to launch a new after-school program at New Lexington Schools and expand current after-school programs at Morgan and Ridgewood Local Schools .
The Ohio Department of Education announced April 28 a total of $ 89 million in Summer Learning and Afterschool Opportunities Grants to 161 community-based partners . The grant programs must be provided during periods of time
when school is not in session and be designed to meet the needs of students who have experienced disruptions to learning in school during the pandemic .
An Afterschool Create grant of $ 885,000 will support establishment of an after-school program for New Lexington Schools , which will begin August 2022 and end June 2024 . An Afterschool Expand grant for $ 76,150.24 will begin August 2022 and end June 2024 . Ridgewood Local Schools and Morgan Local Schools are
the partners for this grant , and the programs will serve k-12 students . These programs will expand on the districts ’ current after-school services by providing additional STEM resources and social-emotional learning .
Through these grant opportunities , the goal of MVESC and the partnering districts is to increase student achievement , improve school attendance , and provide ongoing support to students and families who have been affected by the pandemic .

Batchelor wins primary election

By Jen Jones
On May 3 voters elected to retain Bob Batchelor as Coshocton County Common Pleas judge by a vote of 3,774 for Batchelor and 2,069 for his opponent , Todd Drown .
Batchelor said , “ We are very pleased with the results . It was a long primary , and we worked really hard early on to get as much Republican support as we could . My wife , Shelley , and I went door to door , and we got a lot of positive support . We got lots of crossover support too . This was unexpected , but I really appreciate the support .”
Batchelor also said his goals are to continue relationship building and to look to build a local re-entry program for people who are released from prison . He said if support isn ’ t offered , many will go right back to the homes and groups of friends that got them into trouble in the first place .
“ I think this will help reduce crime in our area ,” Batchelor said .
Drown said , “ I am very thankful to those who supported our campaign for change .”

NOTICE

SMOKE TESTING SEWER LINES

The Village of West Lafayette is conducting a smoke test of the sanitary sewer system .
Work crews will be in your area starting May 24 , 2022 , with a rain-out date on May 25th . A “ Smoke test ” survey will assist the inspection crews in locating breaks and defects in the sewer system .
The smoke should not enter your home unless you have a defect in your home ’ s plumbing system or you have drain traps that are dried-up .
It is advisable for the homeowner to pour a gallon of water into each floor drain prior to the testing date . If smoke does enter your home , there is a strong reason to assume that dangerous sewer gases are entering your home or business . You should evacuate the building immediately and notify the work crew . If you are not at home at the time of testing and return home to find smoke , please call us at 740-545-5434 .
IMPORTANT ! If there is any individual in your home or business that has respiratory problems and is immobile , please notify us at 740-545-5434 prior to the testing date .
