Be aware of the signs of mental-health issues

It goes without saying that we have all been through heck and high water here in the last couple of years as 2020 marked the beginning of a prolonged period of challenges , marked by loss and the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic .
And it ’ s important we recognize the significant impact the pandemic has had on our mental health . The 2020 data , according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness , showed 1-in-5 young people reported the pandemic had a significant negative impact on their mental health , specifically 18 % of our adolescents and 23 % of our young adults . Overall , 1-in-5 U . S . adults experienced a mental-health illness in 2020 .
So what do we do ? Well , identifying mentalhealth concerns can be

hard . The early warning signs of mental illness are often missed as family members , friends and even doctors can overlook lesser-known symptoms as a result of the overall stigma of mental health and lack of education on what all is included with mental health .
So let ’ s review some common signs and
symptoms . The more well known , of course , would be having excessive worry or fear , feeling excessively sad or low , having extreme changes in mood , overusing substances like alcohol or drugs , or thinking about suicide .
But other valid signs or symptoms , telling us we need to look at mental health , can be everyday things like having trouble concentrating , becoming more frequently confused , changes in sleeping habits like getting up in the middle of the night , changes in your eating habits such as over eating or undereating , and physical pain without obvious causes — things like an increase in headaches , stomach aches , or vague and ongoing aches and pains .
It ’ s best not to avoid these symptoms and report them to your primary care physician or go right ahead and seek counseling from a mental care provider . Delaying treatment can lead to affects to your physical health . Did you know people with serious mental illness have an increased risk for chronic disease , like diabetes or cancer ?
Give yourself a mental-health checkup today . Do you need help ? You can call the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board to help find a mental-health provider near you . Their number is 740-454- 8557 .
