Volunteers participate in annual spring cleanup day
By Marianne Austin The Beacon
Coshocton volunteers participated in the annual spring cleanup on April 26.
United Way Executive Director Erin Slaughter said,“ We are out here for our 21st annual Clean Up Coshocton Day. We are going to clean up all of the trash near the Court Square and all over Coshocton. The weather is cooperating so far, no rain. We are hoping for a good turnout and to do some good things this morning. We also want to recognize that it is our 85th year for the United Way of Coshocton County, and we are excited for that as well.”
Max Crown, city service director, assigned areas where they notice high traffic and where they notice a lot of trash, and then some people already had a place in mind for where they wanted to go. A lot of people go in their own neighborhoods as well.
“ We provide safety vests for high-traffic areas, and we do have gloves, trash bags and all of that. Max is good about locations if they don’ t already have a place in mind,” Slaughter said.
Jaime Crawford with Coffee Connection provided doughnuts, and there was bottled water.
“ We want to thank our sponsors Alex Nelson, manager of Coshocton County Recycling and Litter Prevention, for sponsoring our T-shirts,” Slaughter said.“ The first 50 T-shirts are free. Steve Murray with Carroll’ s Men’ s Shop does the shirts for us at a discounted cost, and he has done that for years. The Kimble Company provided a dumpster at the fairgrounds, and the Boy Scouts had their recycle at the fairgrounds. They took appliances, TVs, radios, washers, dryers, refrigerators, anything recyclable.”
Pam Young, lifelong Coshocton resident, has been participating for three or four years now. She said,“ It’ s nice to see all the trash picked up. I just like to see things look nice.”
Lori and Alan Nugen moved to Coshocton in August 2021, and this is the second year they have helped in the cleanup.“ We’ re retired, and you have got to find something to do with your time, so you might as well find something positive.”
The couple has found some interesting things, like an old metal iron, a 45 record that was cracked, shoes, glassware, old blue and white dishes that looked like they were from the‘ 40s or‘ 50s, and a toilet

BF-274220 with this at least 15 years. This is the project we do every year when it is cleanup day, and we continue to take care of the millstone the rest of the year. We love participating with Coshocton Clean Up Day because it’ s our city. We want to beautify it. Kiwanis wants to give back to the community,” Jones said.
Club members Jerry Stenner, Chuck Fornara and Maureen Karl also were clearing the weeds and trash. Karl said the ground was wet, making it easier to pull the weeds up. The group has been cleaning around the millstone for quite a while.
Stenner said,“ We try to keep it nice, and some of us come other times to catch up throughout the year. We try to maintain it year round the best we can, especially today, which is cleanup day. It’ s time for Kiwanis to stand up and do its job. This has been a pretty decent day to do it because it is nice and wet, so the weeds are coming up easier than some years when the ground is hard as a rock. Community members are always stopping by, thanking us for what we do, and they stop by and give us water when we’ re working. They appreciated us.”
