Coshocton celebrates Memorial Day

By Marianne Austin
Pastor Bob Mitchell from Roscoe UMC led the invocation at the Memorial Day services on the Coshocton Court Square . Thanking God for America ’ s freedoms , he said , “ We give thanks today for the empowering grace of American liberty and all who have sacrificed for our liberty so that we can live in freedom .”
The Coshocton High School band , under the direction of Barry Hardesty , played the national anthem , followed by the Pledge of Allegiance .
Piper Andrews , a sophomore at River View High School , read from her Voice of Democracy speech . “ The last time our country was this divided , we had a civil war . Can we all get past our differences , or will we forget that men and women died so that we could believe and say what we want ?”
She quoted Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln , saying King knew there would always be struggles , but
he said to treat all people with kindness .
The Gettysburg Address had a similar theme — all men are created equal . Andrews said she thinks in the future citizens must be relentless in the pursuit of equality and basic human rights , standing for what they believe in but not condemning the beliefs of others .
“ We lean on what those who came before us
believed because it got us this far . We are the generation that can make the change ,” Andrews said .
Sharon Burns , president of Blue Star Mothers , said she was so proud to be an American at the parade because people were standing with their hands over their hearts . She takes delight in asking people of all ages what Memorial Day means to them and hearing their responses .
Marianne Austin
Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 402 set flags for each bell toll in front of the courthouse .
A young man in her youth group said , “ It is a day to remember who died in the army ,” and his little brother said , “ I get scared when they shoot the guns in the parade , but it ’ s a day to remember who fought in the war .”
Her friend said , “ Until you meet someone who put their life on the line , you don ’ t know the hell they went through . God
