Kinkade shares how historical club notes changed

Coshocton Historical Club members met May 13 in the fellowship hall of Roscoe United Methodist Church . The program committee consisted of Bee Lehner , Mary Louise Newell and Brenda Davis .
Six round tables were decorated beautifully by Mary Louise Newell , each one with a different color theme . Colored paper placemats coordinated with a floral centerpiece whose vase was in a matching color . On each table were six tiny glass vases , each containing two or three white mini-carnations .
At the conclusion of the meeting , members were invited to take home the fresh flowers , as a reminder of the program theme , “ Mother ’ s Day / Father ’ s Day .” This sounds like the beginning of a newspaper article that would have been published after a program was held during any of the early years of Coshocton Historical Club , which was organized in 1889 . Don ’ t you think ?
This next paragraph gives a clue into how our meeting write-up has changed over the years . We began with refreshments served from a beautifully appointed buffet table , which had bowls of fresh flowers . Our hostesses served slices of warm cherry cobbler , baked at the church by Bee Lehner . Bee gave us the recipe : two cans , a box and a stick . Surely that didn ’ t happen during the early years of the club ’ s meetings .
Following the social time , we held our business meeting . Reports were given . We decided to make charitable contributions from our treasury to six different local organizations . This was the final meeting of the program year , which holds meetings on the second Monday of October , November and December and then resumes with programs in March , April and May .
It ’ s at the May meeting that members sign up to host the following year ’ s programs . All six months were filled by the end of the meeting . They will include details of meeting dates , locations , program members , topics , a devotion leader and the subject of each meeting ’ s roll call . Very efficient , wouldn ’ t you say ? Since the topic was Mother ’ s Day / Father ’ s Day , our roll call topic was to tell something about your mother , as well as the year she was born . This was one of the most enjoyable parts of the meeting , when members shared a short story or a memory from their childhood .
Brenda Davis read a poem for our devotions . Bee Lehner led the program by giving us the history of the forming of Mother ’ s Day and then the forming , much later , of Father ’ s Day . These were long processes , from the original idea until the act of Congress to make these holidays official . Bee also told about the practice of wearing a white carnation that day , real or artificial , if your mother was deceased or wearing a red carnation if your mother was still living .
Now let me give you some notes from a program booklet for the year 2018- 19 . Coshocton Historical Club was organized in 1889 , state federated in 1894 and city-county federated in 1912-79 . Last names of women who were founders of the historical club in 1889 were Agnew , Baker , Compton , Denman , Fisher , Jones , Johnston , Pomerene and Olney . This program booklet contained a club collect , which was written by Mary Stewart in 1904 . It contained a club directory , which our current program books still do . Then it contained all six articles of the club ’ s constitution and bylaws , which were revised in 2010 .
The most interesting part of this program booklet lists past presidents of the historical club . There is no name for the period of

1889-93 . The first name listed for the term of 1893-94 is Miss L . Viola Robinson , with her married name in parenthesis ( Mrs . Thomas Humrickhouse ). There are three pages listing names of women who served as president of the club and who I would consider to be prominent
citizens of Coshocton .
Here ’ s where we get to the good part . Before closing the meeting and wishing everyone a great summer , Bee Lehner brought forward a balloon and a birthday cake . She presented these to Lula Williams , our member who will celebrate her birthday
on Thursday , June 27 , when we will be in summer recess . We sang “ Happy Birthday ” to Lula and wished her well .
We honored our dear friend Lula Williams because she is one of our most prominent Coshocton citizens of the ages . On June 27 she will be 103 years old .
Following the meeting , Coshocton Historical Club member Les Widder took Lula for a ride into Roscoe Village in his restored 1919 Model T Ford . A smiling Lula told us , “ I haven ’ t ridden in one of these for ages . My father had a Model T , but it was just a regular one , not the fancier Touring Car , when I was about 10 years old .”
My next “ Letter from Sally ” will tell you about my interview with Lula . I promised her the story will not read like an obituary , and she was thankful for that .
