Classic Corvettes fill Roscoe at its annual event

By Marianne Austin
Classic Corvette owners and enthusiasts came from near and far to enjoy classic automobiles on June 12 at Roscoe Village ’ s 23rd annual car show , sponsored by the Classic Glass Corvette Club based out of New Philadelphia . Rick Conti from Conklin Chevrolet had giveaways . Spike Man DJ Service out of Scio provided classic rock all afternoon .
“ This is a great place to have a show . It started out a cloudy , rainy morning , but we ’ ve got well over 100 cars here already , and we expect more to come in before the show is over ,” said Mike Johnson , chairman of the event . “ Corvettes are categorized in generations , like a C-1 Corvette is 1953- 62 , C-2 is 63-67 . There are different body styles , so in the case of the C-8 , it ’ s the newest one . The engine is in a totally different place than it was in the past C-Vetts .
“ We have first , second and third place in each one of the generations , plus prizes for Best of Show and Club Choice , as well as Oldest Corvette and an award for largest club attendance . Roscoe Village also has an award for their choice with their own award for that . We have clubs from Pennsylvania , Shenango Valley , Vett Set Society , Street Elite Club out of Columbus and Canton Corvette Club , a fairly new club .”

Corvette Club in Pennsylvania , brought a Corvette from 1964 that he had just finished renovating .
“ I purchased it from the original owner about four years ago ,” he said . “ The former owner had it for 54 years , and it was sitting in his garage for about 29 . It needed a complete frameoff restoration , body work and paint . I kept it all original because it was all numbers matching . Yesterday we drove it here . It was the first time out , three-hour drive and it did great . I have three Corvettes , a 64 and 69 and a 2010 .
“ Many years ago when I
was in high school , I worked at Arby ’ s restaurant in the drive-thru , and this beautiful young lady would come through in an orange 1975 Corvette , and I remember telling the other employees that someday I was going to have one of those . One of my co-workers asked , ‘ The blonde driving the car or the car ?’ And I said both . That started my love for them , and it took me a long time to get one , but now I have three . We never miss the Roscoe show . We ’ ve been coming for years as a club .”
Webber also won the Roscoe Village Choice Award .

Apricot Brandy is owned by David Kreager .
David Kreager of Millersport is the owner of a 1954 Corvette raced by Jimmy Elliot back in the late ‘ 60s .
“ He was one heck of a racer , and he ’ s still alive , 83 years old and lives in Florida ,” Pam Osborn said . “ He comes to the shows every now and then to see his car . The car was painted apricot with spiderwebbing , which was a common thing back then . It has the original paint job . A friend of ours had it in a garage for 40 years and took all the racing lettering off . We found the original guy — Dauber in the Cincinnati area — from 50 years ago , and he restored it . He put the graphics on it the same as it was then . He still had all the signs and lettering he ever used on all cars .
“ The 10.39 written on the car is because she did pull that out of the hole . She was really quick , and that made the bigger cars hard to catch up with her . She would win at both ends of the track , take-off and coming in . The letters and lines are by Dauber ; he puts his own little signs and sayings on his work . Under the butterfly , it says , ‘ The seeds of the future have roots in the past .’ With the graphics on it , it fits a whole different category because now it is historical .”
