The best records are found at the National Archives

You probably know that one of the best records for genealogical purposes is maintained by the National Archives in Washington , D . C . Virtually everyone living in the United States is listed somewhere in the records of one government agency or another , but did you know some of the oldest records authorized by the government are the payrolls of the Continental Army , whose records are used primarily today to establish proof of pedigree ?
There are some 38 census taken by individual colonies and states between 1600 and 1789 . These records were made under the supervision of colonial governors , by sheriffs and other county or town officials , and were used by the British Board to Trade to administer the affairs of the colonies .
A great deal of genealogical information is obtained in the census . Keep in mind they are neither completely accurate

Here are some samples of census records to give you an idea what ’ s available :
1820 Census
Name of the head of the family , number of free white males under 10 years of age , number of free white males between 10 and 16 years of age , number of free white males and females between 17 and 18 years of age , number of free white males and females between 18 and 26 years of age , number of free white males and females between 26 and 45 years of age , number of free white males and females over 45 years of age , number of naturalized aliens , number of persons engaged in agriculture , commerce and manufacturing , number of free black persons , number of all persons except Indians not taxed .
1830 Census
Name of the head of the family , number of free white persons under the age of 5-100 , number of persons engaged in various professions , names and ages of pensioners from Revolutionary War military service , number of deaf , dumb and insane white persons , number of deaf , dumb and insane black persons , information about schools , number of aliens not naturalized .
1850 Census
Name , age , sex and color of each persons in the household , profession of each person over 15 years of age , value of real

The 1860 census has the same information contained in 1850 census .
During the War of 1812 , the British burned several buildings in Washington . Destroyed in that fire were the 1790 census records for Delaware , New Jersey , Virginia , Tennessee , Georgia and Kentucky .

Melenke publishes first book , plans signing in August

Lucy Bryan Melenke has published her first book , “ In Between Places : A Memoir in Essays .” In her late 20s , she was between two significant life experiences . Her marriage was over , and her father had passed away due to cancer . She found herself losing faith . She was trying to find herself again , so she turned to the world to find meaning .
Her collection of essays takes readers on a reflective journey to different locations in the country and new life experiences to help answer the questions she had . Some of her travels took her to Yosemite National Park and West Virginia ’ s Dolly Sods Wilderness , and two essays are set in Coshocton County .
She asked , “ Why is it so hard to let go and find
love again ?” The essays are about marriage and having children , as well as travel lectures , memories and essays on meditation , grief , acceptance , change , empowerment , and belonging .
Melenke sees herself as a writer , mother , teacher , adventurer and naturalist . She divides her time between Coshocton County and Virginia ’ s Shenandoah Valley , where she
teaches writing at James Madison University .
Her essays have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and published in Quarterly West , Nashville Review , Earth Island
Journal and Sojourners . She is known for her work with Coshoctonians for Peace and Equality .
Melenke will do a public reading and book-signing at the Wooly Pig Farm
Brewery on the evening of Sunday , Aug . 7 . The creative nonfiction book , “ In Between Places : A Memoir in Essays ,” was published June 21 by Homebound Publications .
