Teen volunteers are a big help at Camp Invention

By Josie Sellers
Some students enjoy Camp Invention so much they come back as teens to volunteer .
“ I really enjoyed it and learned a lot when I went ,” said Hollee Sheneman , a junior at River View High School .
Sheneman was one of six teens who volunteered at River View ’ s Camp Invention , which was held at Keene Elementary School .
“ I volunteered last year too ,” she said . “ It was fun . I learned how to work with kids and help them . It was a really good experience .”
Kiera McPeck also volunteered last year .
“ I came back because I loved it so much ,” the River View High School senior said . “ The kids have so much fun .”
Another volunteer back from last year was Caily Shriver .

Camp Invention volunteer Kiera McPeck posed for a quick picture before starting the last day of camp at Keene Elementary School . She was one of six teen volunteers that helped students out during the camp , which focuses on STEM lessons .
“ I did it last year and really liked it ,” she said . “ I was surprised I liked it , but the kids are cool .”
Eighty-three students in kindergarten through sixth grade attend Camp Invention at Keene . Teachers from River View ’ s district led campers through STEM activities , and the teens assisted .
“( The volunteers ) are a huge help ,” said Tracey Herron , who is the camp director for River View .
This year ’ s Camp Invention lessons were Make a Splash with Robotic Aquatics , Blast Off for Spacecation , Spin into NIHF ’ s The Attic and Get Rolling with Marble Arcade .
The marble arcade was a big hit with several students . Fourthgrader Zach Copenhaver enjoyed it because he got to build ramps . Secondgrader Aubrey West liked it because she got to work with cardboard and had to bend supplies . Her classmate Sawyer Sellers agreed that working with the cardboard was fun and said you had to adjust your ramps sometimes .
Herron has led River View ’ s Camp Invention for at least the last five years .
“ The kiddos get to learn and be creative ,” she said . “ They have a blast , and it ’ s not like school at all .”
Herron is thankful for the various sponsors that help make Camp Invention affordable for families .
According to the Camp
Invention website , the typical camp fee is $ 245 , but here in Coshocton it was only $ 35 per camper . That was made possible by donations from the following funds of the Coshocton Foundation : Blessings Fund , William & Sue Brown Donor Advised Fund , Edwin F . Mulligan Endowed Fund , Pierce Family Fund , Simpson

Family Donor Advised Fund , George Wesley and June R . Henglein Memorial Fund , and Ralph D . & Judy P . Wisenburg Fund .
