June 3, 2020 The Beacon • 11 Coshocton Farmers Market opens Saturday, June 6 By Mary Meyer After a month’s delay due to coronavirus concerns, Coshocton Farmers Market will open this Saturday at its Main Street location, along the 300 block of Main Street. This year has been an unusual one with extra cold weather in April on top of stay-at-home orders. Booths will be set up on the courthouse side of the street with wide spacing between them. The start of the season will feature early spring produce such as asparagus, along with honey, maple syrup, baked goods and crafts. Penny Carroll will be at the market the first two Saturdays with her perennial plants including daylilies, hostas and other varieties. Becky Bowden will offer tomato plants for sale. The market is open from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays from this week through October on the 300 block of Main Street in Coshocton. The farmers’ market always welcomes new vendors. Rice to continue baseball career at Bluffton University By Marianne Austin Garrett Rice, son of Jeanette and Joe Rice of Coshocton, signed his national letter of intent to play baseball at Div. III Bluffton University in Bluffton. The Coshocton High School graduate began playing T-ball while at Lincoln Elementary and continued to grow and learn good sportsmanship up through high school, said his parents, who are both proud of his hard work. In junior high and high school, Rice went out for football, basketball and track as well but had a love for baseball. Rice was a three-year letterman at Coshocton in football and baseball. III Bluffton University in Bluffton. well and was inducted into the National Honor Society. “I’m really excited,” Rice said. “I wanted another chance to play at college level.” Rice applied at other colleges, but having played in a baseball tournament for the American Legion #65 team at Bluffton, it was the school that stuck out for him. Rice plans to pursue a degree in education while at Bluffton. “I would like to teach social studies and come back and coach for Coshocton,” he said. “We are very proud of Garret Rice’s accomplishments here at CHS. He has been a great leader on and off the field and has served as a catalyst for our program over the past four years. We hope that he continues his great success at Bluffton University,” said Tim Fortney, Coshocton High School athletic director.
