Early summer produce for sale at Coshocton Farmers Market on Main Street includes sweet local peas , as well as beets , cabbage , lettuce and salad mix , kale and other greens , turnips , summer apples , early summer squash and cucumbers .
Last Saturday , Strawberry Hill Farm offered their freshly harvested garlic , and will have more for the next few weeks . Garlic is planted in the fall and harvested in early summer . Also called the “ Stinking Rose ,” garlic is a member of the lily family and a cousin to onions , leeks , chives , and shallots .
Garlic is an excellent source of vitamin B6 , and a good source of selenium , manganese , and vitamin C . It contains calcium , phosphorous , iron , copper , potassium , and protein . Crushing or pressing the garlic helps release its nutrients . Most of all , it adds delicious flavor to a wide variety of dishes . Garlic can be used fresh or stored in a cool , dry place .
