The ODH shares signs of heat-related health issues

The Ohio Department of Health is encouraging awareness about the health effects caused by extreme heat.
A heat wave is defined as a prolonged period of excessive heat, often combined with high humidity, which can be dangerously hot and pose serious health risks to everyone, particularly the elderly, children and those with health conditions.
During extreme heat
— Stay indoors and, if possible, stay in an airconditioned place.
— If air-conditioning is not available in your home, find a nearby cooling center.
— Cover windows with drapes or shades.
— Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
— Take cool showers or

— Certain health conditions may make you less tolerant to heat. This can be due to the condition itself or any medicine you may take to manage it.
— Your age also might affect how likely you are to develop heat intolerance. The CDC says people over 65 are more likely to have heat-related health issues.— Other issues and conditions can make you more likely to have heat intolerance. These include alcohol use, bacterial or viral infection, having had heat exhaustion or heat stroke before, illegal drug use, lack of physical fitness, menopause, and pregnancy.
— Never leave people or pets in a closed, parked vehicle.
— Consider pet safety. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of cool water and access to comfortable shade. Asphalt and dark pavement can be very hot to your pet’ s feet.

After extreme heat— Continue to drink plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty.
— Seek medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms of heat-related illness such as muscle cramps, headaches, nausea or vomiting.
— Gradually reintroduce activities: avoid immediate vigorous exercise and ease into regular activities.
— Monitor air-quality reports: Stay informed and limit outdoor activities until air quality improves.
