Remembering another South Sixth Street business

This is the Letter I planned to type on June 6 before the significance of that date hit me. The smells of Percy’ s Rapid Shoe Repair reminded me of another business that was two or three doors away on South Sixth Street: C & C Photo. Do you remember that?
Charlie and Carma( or was it Carmen?) owned that shop, which I think later became a Chinese restaurant. Their last name escapes me. In the1960s and 1970s, we took our 35 mm film to be developed into slides and other camera film to be developed into pictures, accompanied by negatives.
For a while, theirs was the only place in Coshocton to get our pictures developed. There was a real need for their services. Charlie developed the film in a back room. Carmen helped us at the counter. They had a display of old cameras on the shelves of their store.
Do you remember the terrible smell of photo developing fluid that permeated that store? There’ s only one word to describe it: acid-awful-us. Charlie was the one who breathed it the most.
C & C Photo helped us preserve memories. Ha! I just remembered the name of another photography business that was located in Roscoe
Village, I think. At an auction in 1990 of household goods of Glenn’ s Grampa Kinkade, he won the bid for a large oval wedding picture of his greatgrandfather William Jacob Kinkade and his first wife Mary Jane Stewart Kinkade.
The picture was actually done in charcoal. On the back was the name“ A. L. Matthews— Undertaker, Photography and Rubber Tiring.”
When our son Jeff died in 1992, we looked through old pictures to find some for a display. It was then I realized one of mankind’ s best inventions was photography. The inventor’ s last name was Land, I think. A picture can capture a moment that would otherwise be forgotten.
We found a precious picture, taken years ago, that ultimately was on the wall of our camper. It showed Jeff, holding the hand of his sister, seven years younger than him, as they stood at sunset at Mont St. Pierre, Quebec, Canada. Their figures are silhouetted. She was wearing the Holly Hobbie bonnet Mum made her.
