Letter to the Editor ,
In reflecting about the recent gun violence in the United States , I am wondering why we just seem to accept that it is OK and that we as a group of people get upset when there is a discussion about limiting the availability of getting and owning guns ?
The Second Amendment of the Constitution states , “ A well-regulated Militia , being necessary to security of a free state , the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed .” This was passed by Congress on Sept . 25 , 1789 , and fully ratified by the states on Dec . 15 , 1791 , as a part of the amendments we call the Bill of Rights .
This was a different time in our history , and I would like to point out several issues that have

The British government was not very keen that “ commoners ” have weapons to defend themselves . In addition , the creation of a standing army was voted into existence on Sept . 29 , 1789 , and was made up of only 700 men and officers and known as the American First Regiment .
There is some indication this was formed on June 3 , 1784 . The fear of a standing army being utilized to support a dictator , king or tyrant was very much ingrained in the colonists ’ minds .

Fast forward to 2022 and it ’ s seemingly easier to get a semi-automatic gun or automatic gun than a fishing license . In regard to a wellorganized militia with a responsible chain of command that is available for states to use , that is properly called the National Guard . The real issue is allowing guns to fall into the hands of people who are obviously not interested in defending but are intent on offending .
I wonder if we make it super simple with an analogy . If your child was being hit with a baseball bat on the playground , would you give your child a bat to hit back or would you want the other child to be punished for inappropriate behavior ? Would you

then tell your child you would get them multiple bats so they could protect themselves on the playground ? Or would you tell your child they will be protected because there is only one door to enter the building and an un-named teacher who has a license to carry a ball bat is in the building in case a child comes to school with a ball bat ?

O b v i o u s l y , t h e r e needs to be some regulation . I do not understand the pushback about registration , mental-health checks or whatever else should be in place to secure a “ free society ” that does not have to be in fear of being gunned down by someone who should not have a gun .
