June marks Men ’ s Health Month

June is Men ’ s Health Awareness Month , and we wanted to address some troubling statistics and what we , as a community , might be able to do to change them . On average : — Men live about five years less than their female counterparts . That ’ s according to Men ’ s Health Network .
— Additionally , men have a higher death rate for most of the leading causes of death including heart disease , diabetes
and suicide .
— One-in-two men will develop cancer in their lifetime .
— Unfortunately , men make half as many physician visits for prevention as women .
Want to see these stats change ? The Friday before Father ’ s Day , which is June 17 , it is Wear Blue Day , which seeks to raise awareness about the importance of male health and to encourage men to live longer .
Wear Blue Day is celebrated by private corporations , government agencies , sports teams , faith-based communities and individuals to show their concern for the health and well-being of boys and men . So consider wearing blue on Friday and share a pic on
social media to spread awareness .
To all the women out there , please take this month to encourage the boys and men in your life to schedule a checkup . And stay involved because he needs you and you need him .
You can find resources regarding men ’ s health , including the “ Get It Checked ” Checkup and Screening Guidelines for Men , at www . menshealthnetwork . org .
