SATURDAY , JULY 3 , 1971 Thursday a record was set at Hilltop Golf Course . Jim Hamilton scored 59 swings for the course ’ 18 holes . The previous record was held by Max McConnell with 62 .
FRIDAY , JULY 3 , 1981 A major figure in the county ’ s veterans ’ community , county scouting and former mayor of Roscoe has passed away . Herbert R . Seeley was born in Newton , Illinois on July 6 , 1893 . In 1945 he came to Coshocton , working as part of the Muskingum Flood Control District . Three years later he would become mayor of Roscoe serving a single term from 1948 to 1952 . He would also operate the Standard Oil Company service station on Fourth and Walnut . Herbert joined the VFW in 1939 and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans organization . In both organizations he served a myriad of roles including district commander for each . He is survived by his wife Viva Mae Turner , three stepdaughters , seven grandchildren , six great grandchildren , a brother , a sister and four nieces and nephews .
SUNDAY , JULY 7 , 1991 Former Black Bear Tony Shrimplin will play football at Waynesburg College in Pennsylvania . The third county student joining college level football this year , Shrimplin will play fullback for the Yellowjackets . “ He ’ s got the versatility we look for ,” said Waynesburg coach Ty Clarke . Waynesburg is a Div . III school and is currently focused on building up its football program which has had six winning seasons over the past 10 years . For River View Shrimplin served as linebacker . Redskin Bryan Wiggins and fellow Black Bear Kevin Foster both will be joining college teams this upcoming season .
SUNDAY , JULY 1 , 2001 Wade Lucas has been unanimously voted in as Coshocton City School ’ s new superintendent . The wellknown football coach has always aimed to become superintendent . After taking the post he will no longer be able to coach or serve as athletic director , but he was already aware of that fact . “ As soon as I started my course work as superintendent , I knew some things would come to an end ,” Lucas said .
WEDNESDAY , JULY 6 , 2011 A 30x150 foot American flag graced Main Street right above the 300 block , which the Good News Bookstore is a part of . Although the flag was intended for Coshocton ’ s Bicentennial it managed to arrive in time for the Fourth . As the flag was being prepared on June 26th Aninn plant manager , Rick Merrell spoke about the city ’ s plans . “ We ’ ll also be putting up some flags in the square - on the stage - and they ’ ll start with 1776 and walk us through the history of flags for America . You ’ ll be able to see when the flag flew and a bit of history about each one .” It is also in time for the America in Bloom program , which will be sending judges to participating towns and cities .
