Clary Gardens has more to offer this summer

By Tara Gracyk
Coshocton ’ s beloved and beautiful Clary Gardens is known for more than their creative and colorful gardens . They are also known for their creative and fun programs and activities . For instance , this year Clary Gardens partnered with other local businesses and associations to put on a fun-filled summer children ’ s program . The other organizations who participated include the Coshocton Public Library , Johnson- Humrickhouse Museum , Pomerene Center for the Arts and Roscoe Village .
Each business picked a day of the week to host the children which allowed the children to have an activity each day . Clary Gardens chose to host the children on Tuesday mornings . The program was for preschool and school age children , with parents being encouraged to participate as well . Even though the program is typically free , there was a $ 1 charge this year . Each of the participating organizations was in charge of choosing the activities for their specific location as well as their own themes .
Clary Gardens , who is celebrating their 20 th anniversary this year , chose to go with a circus theme , “ Under the Big Top .” Accordingly , their activities for the summer revolved around that theme . For instance , one week they did tightrope walkers and surface tension where they talked about animals and insects that can walk on water . They even planted flowers that look like clown noses . Some of the other activities Clary Gardens did involved cave exploration , rocks , scavenger hunts and frogs . The week when frogs were
concentrated on , they taught the children about the life cycle of frogs , allowed the children to hold frogs , held a frog jumping contest and so much more .
Clary Gardens and the Coshocton Public Library partnered together to create a year-round story
walk , which is new this year . According to Jandi Adams , executive director of Clary Gardens , the library really spear headed the project . “ There are 18 posts all throughout our Woodlands trail and those posts tell a story ,” Adams said . “ The theme of the book this summer is circus animals ; however , the theme will change quarterly .”
“ Part of our mission is incorporating children ’ s education , local history and the arts ,” Adams
said . Adams shared how the Clary Brothers Florist started in 1947 and the gardens developed as a way to memorialize the family and what they did for the community . Mrs .
Clary still lives in town , is very active with the gardens and is turning 91 this summer Adams said .
At the end of June , beginning of July , Clary Gardens began construction on an open-air pavilion designed to hold up to 200 people . It is scheduled to be completed

One of those activities includes an open house on Aug . 12 to celebrate the garden ’ s 20 th Anniversary . “ The open house we will have the second week of August where members , stake holders and community members can come together and celebrate with us . We intend to showcase where we started , how we started and how far we have come ” Adams said . This open house will follow the “ Under the Big Top ” circus theme too , and this is a free event open to the community .
Adams was also excited to announce that the butterfly exhibit , one of the favorite summer activities , is in fact happening , just a couple of months later than usual . The exhibit will be Aug . 10-14 .
Clary Gardens is open all year during daylight hours . For a complete listing of upcoming activities , visit www . clarygardens . org or find them on Facebook .
