By Josie Sellers
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 23 to officially celebrate the start of construction for the Genesis Coshocton Medical Center on U . S . 36 across from Walmart .
“ Today marks the beginning of a new era of healthcare in the Coshocton area ,” said Matthew Perry , Genesis HealthCare System president and CEO . “ This ceremony symbolizes the excitement that is building for the Genesis Coshocton Medical Center . In addition to building the medical center at 48119 U . S . 36 , Genesis will open a second primary care physicians office in the shopping plaza next to Walmart .
Genesis ’ goal is to bring the most frequently used healthcare services to people while being able to seamlessly connect them to more options at the hospital ’ s main campus . Perry believes this is the future for small rural communities and a way to connect them to new and better services .

Jordan Sharp , children ’ s ministry director , said they are planning on renovating the former ReStore building . “ The new roof should be finished soon , and then the work inside can begin . We ’ ve already started cleaning up things inside . How fast the renovation goes will depend on when funds become available .”
The plans for the building include a social hall to be used by the church that also can be rented out to the public , a food pantry and a room where someone who needs a place to stay for a night or two can sleep . “ These are the main three things we are focusing on right now ,” Sharp said .
The church also will hold a community fun day on Saturday , Aug . 7 from 11 a . m .
to 3 p . m . at the church . There will be carnival games , a bounce house and an inflatable obstacle course .
“ We are going to have raffles for adults and kids and cake walks . We are working on having live music too . And local businesses donated a lot of items . We are so grateful for that ,” Sharp said .
Sharp said everything is free , and there will be a drawing for a scooter and a bike during their regular Sunday service on Sunday , Aug . 8 .
Food will be available including hot dogs , chips , drinks and treats .
“ We wanted to have a fun day for the community to let people know the church is there . We have a great kids program . Since COVID some people are still hesitant to come out , and we understand that . We just want people to know we are here and to come and meet us and have some fun ,” Sharp said .
Sharp said everyone is invited to the church ’ s services on Sunday at 2 p . m . and Thursday at 7 p . m .
