Bean dinner back on schedule this year

The 154 th annual G . A . R . Bean Dinner will take place on the customary third Sunday in August on Aug . 15 , at McElwee Park in New Castle .
Opening ceremonies will start with a flag raising at 10:45 a . m . by Mohawk Valley 4-H Club . Food will be available from 11 a . m . to 2 p . m . The menu includes specialties such as soup beans ( cooked over an open fire in iron kettles ), cornbread , potato salad , shredded chicken or hotdog sandwiches , pie and bottled water . Boxed price will be $ 10 per meal which includes soup beans and cornbread , potato salad , sandwich , pie and drink . The Walhonding Rube Band will perform from 1-2 p . m .
Come dine in or pick up food .
The Grand Army of the Republic Bean Dinner is held annually in commemoration of the Charles C . Nichols Post , formed in 1867 to support the widows and orphans . Today the money is donated to the veterans emergency fund . Historically , the bean dinner was held on the Nichols Farm west of New Castle . On bequeath of McElwee Park to the community more than 100 years ago , the commemoration was transferred to its present location .
Contributions will be greatly appreciated and are used for park upkeep and improvements .

Block party planned for Sunday , Aug . 15

The 12th annual Chestnut Crossing Block Party will be held from 4-7 p . m . Sunday , Aug . 15 , at 2521 Glenview Way in Coshocton .
All are invited to come enjoy free fun and food . There will be horse rides , slushies , a bounce house , carnival games , face painting , a truck from Three Rivers Fire District , a petting zoo , music , dunk tank , food and more . If you would like to help , bring a covered dish to share .

On July 22 , the River Greens Thursday Morning Ladies played for most one putts .
A-flight winner was Missy Vanderkam ( 5 ) and B-flight winner was Linda Miller ( 2 ). Other low scores were Missy Vanderkam , 40 ; Connie Lahna , 40 ; Mardella Rice , 43 ; Rhonda Barlan ,
